11 Things Dating in New York City Has Taught Me

I came to New York City as a single girl. I was part of the generation of young women who lived and breathed by the lessons of Sex and the City. so I was of the delusional notion that I’d land my very own Mr. Big in no time. Oh, how cruel reality can be.

My career was always at the forefront, but since I’m a living, breathing human, it was also my intention to land a partner at some point. It wasn’t necessary to my existence, but definitely something I wanted. So, like any single woman in the city, I went through the motions of dating, having flings and a couple of short relationships in the hopes of finding “the one.” Before I met my fiancé — not in New York City mind you — I had been dating in this town for almost ten years; ten long and arduous years of ups and downs, drama, tears, joy and the rest of it.

It’s not easy to date in New York. New Yorkers have a different idea of what love is, and for a lot of us, it’s not even a priority until later on in the game. However, with the chapter of my dating life officially closed (I hope), I like to think I learned a couple things.

1. You’ll get stood up at some point.

It will probably take you days, if not weeks, to admit to your friends that it happened, but it’s a fact: you will be stood up. In most cases it will be because the person you’re supposed to meet was pushed into the date in the first place. No matter the particulars, remember that you’re not the one to blame.

2. Treatment of servers says everything.

If your date treats a waiter, or anyone in the service industry for that matter, like they’re even remotely beneath him, then bail. The biggest red flag in the dating world is poor treatment of servers. It’s unforgivable.

3. You’ll make a scene in public.

There are a lot of options in NYC and many approach this by dating more than one person at the same time. It’s not easy to run into someone you thought you were ready to get serious with when he’s out on a date with someone else. Try to keep the throwing of wine glasses to a minimum; it can get pretty pricey after three or four.

4. Texts don’t have subliminal messages.

“What are you doing Friday?” is not code for something else, nor is “I had a good time last night.” And, before you drive yourself mad, “good” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Granted, “great” would both look and sound better, but remember that not everyone has the vast vocabulary that you do.

5. You’ll try online dating eventually .

Even if you’re one of those people who is adamantly against it, you’ll try the online dating scene at least once. I was on OKCupid for all of one week. It was, for lack of a better word, depressing. But think of it this way — you’ll probably find your next job through some sort of professional or social contact or referral, but you might as well apply for jobs online too, right? Same is true of finding a mate — especially in a huge city like NYC.

6. You’ll always find an SATC scenario that fits your dating life.

If you’re part of the Sex and the City generation like me, you will never be free of relating your dating woes to those of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. You’ll find that the parallels are often uncanny. However, no one will chase you to Paris. I know, because I tried that one.

7. You’ll be a repeat offender.

Yes, you will meet a douchebag, get screwed over by him, and then go back for more. You will do this more times than you’ll admit. You’ll also have him on speed dial for drunken booty calls, although you won’t tell a soul this — not even your therapist to whom you pay $100 a session after insurance.

8. You’re likely to “love” with one foot out the door.

New York is a city of 8 million people, so it’s hard not to assume that there might be someone better out there for you. This isn’t wrong, rude or even a bad thing. Curiosity may kill cats, kittens and other felines, but it’s also very human. Even in your most smitten of states, you’ll wonder, “Can there be more than this?”

9. You’ll definitely date someone else’s sloppy seconds.

If you’ve dated within your professional and personal circles, which you obviously have, it is more than likely you’ll find yourself on a date with someone else’s ex, either knowingly or unknowingly. The term “sloppy seconds” isn’t a pretty one, but because it’s unavoidable, you may want to come up with a flowery euphemism for it instead.

10. You should avoid people who say they’re in an open relationship.

If there’s anything I’ve learned, and learned the hard way, it’s that people in open relationships are a tricky breed. While I don’t knock their choices, I can attest to the fact that everyone I’ve had, er, “run-ins” with were actually not in an open relationship at all. They were just straight-up cheaters. Not cool. Besides, even if they claim their open relationship is legit, that doesn’t bode well for your long-term prospects.

11. You really can’t change people.

Go ahead and try, try again. You can’t change people, you can’t fix wounded birds, you can’t save people from themselves, and you especially shouldn’t sacrifice who you are because of someone else’s shit. So, quit it, Florence Nightingale.

How to Date in NYC: Manhattan Dating Advice from the Pros

By Pamela Skillings. Manhattan, NY Expert

Updated March 31, 2016.

Dating in New York City is always an adventure. You never know if a particular night out will turn into an episode of Sex and the City. The Odd Couple. or Law Order. Wouldn t it be nice to have some expert advice on New York City dating etiquette and get some pointers on what NOT to do?

Unfortunately, I have been out of the dating game for years and was never very good at it to begin with. So I asked New York-based relationship experts, matchmakers, and authors Tamsen Fadal and Matt Titus to share some tips on how to find love (or at least a good time) in New York City.

They offer unique his-and-hers perspectives on NYC dating dilemmas and put forth some great tips on just how to date in New York City.

What are the hardest things about dating in New York City? Is there NYC-specific dating etiquette that people should know about?

Matt: I have to say that New York City men have got it made. There are 200,000 more single women than single men in the Big Apple, so men are kings here! And I will be the first one to admit that most NYC men have a little bit of an entitlement issue when it comes to women.

Tamsen: I wouldn t say kings, Matthew. But I would call them repercussionless daters. Their mentality is such that if the woman they are on a date with isn t giving them exactly what they want, they have no problem ending the date abruptly and moving on to the next woman, who they believe is around the corner waiting in desperation to go out with them. Plus, many times these men are in absolutely no hurry to commit to one woman.

Matt: Well, why should they be? They have way too many options with all of the single women out there more than willing to go out with them.

A lot of women in New York start to compromise what they really want in a man just to have a dating life. The best way for a woman to date in New York City is to keep it casual and make sure that any man interested in her understands that she is dating other guys.

Tamsen: This accomplishes two objectives. It immediately gives the message to the guy that other men are interested in her, which validates him and his interest in her. Secondly, men love to compete against one another when it comes to female attention. By telling him that he is one of many other guys vying for her attention, it will make him want to be the best of the rest and try really hard.

Where are the best places to meet great guys in New York?

Tamsen : I recommend uncontrived environments: Central Park dog runs, Whole Foods, and running clubs. Charity events and volunteer groups are also great. Chelsea Piers and Harry s Cafe on Wall Street are also very man-friendly places.

Where are the best places to meet great women in New York?

Matt: I like the fashion district and the West Village. as well as the cosmetic departments in the three B s: Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman. and Barneys.

As professional matchmakers, can you share the most common dating and relationship mistakes that you see people make?

Tamsen says that men make the following mistakes:

  1. They do not follow through
  2. They ask questions about a woman s romantic past
  3. They have lost the ability to be chivalrous
  4. They do not communicate well
  5. They can be emotionally unavailable

Matt says women make the following mistakes:

  1. They call guys first
  2. They sleep with men too soon
  3. They ask the guy to define the relationship
  4. They are too available
  5. They allow everything to be on the man s terms

Get out of Manhattan!

It s a New York city stereotype: the urbanite who is so in love with Manhattan that they only leave the island for emergencies (and certainly not for dates!). Yet, to stick to the familiar means missing out on some great New York dating opportunities and places to meet singles.

Brooklyn is just one part of the city that is full to bursting with great dates, from coffee to cocktails. If you re pulling out all the stops, try The River Caf . the food here is exquisite and perfectly matched by the oh-so-romantic views across the water. For a more low-key (and unusual) first meeting, The Waystation is ideal: it s home to live music, excellent drinks and a certain blue box that s right, it is Doctor Who themed.

Embrace your inner tourist

Of course, there are plenty of amazing NYC dating ideas to be had wherever you are in the city including the more well-known spots. In fact, Ella Fitzgerald may have been onto something when she sang about turning Manhattan into an isle of joy.

In the song, Ella sings about all the romantic, touristy things she loves to do: from Central Park to Coney Island. They re clich , sure, even a bit cheesy. And yet, hardly any true New Yorkers have tried them. So shake things up! Instead of standing in line for yet another secret speakeasy, do something classic. Rent boats at the Loeb Boathouse or make it a mission to eat at Katz s Delicatessen. Be silly. Put the fun back into New York dating.

Head for the rooftops

What s a first date without a touch of romance? To fully make the most of it, New York style, you re going to have to get really high by heading to one of New York s hundreds of amazing rooftop bars, gardens or restaurants.

230 Fifth is one of these; a rooftop paradise that boasts simply incredible views of that New York skyline. It s an ideal date venue no matter what the weather their gigantic (yet cozy) umbrellas are ideal to shelter under. Alternatively, try the Roof Garden Caf at the Met (open May Oct). Starting your date in the iconic museum and winding your way to the picturesque rooftop means enjoying true romance, New York style.

What is a dating community?

A dating community is a community for singles, who are looking to communicate with people with similar interests, who are interested in new adventures or who want to fall in love. Since the purpose of a community is to find people with similar interests, the basis for each community may be different. However, flirting is a general theme that can be found in each community.

Where can you find a dating community?

Finding and joining a dating community is simple since the Internet can provide many different platforms each with distinctive characteristics. Size is particularly important for each community: The more people who frequent the community, the higher the chance to meet that special someone. For this reason, it is important to carefully select the community so as to avoid multiple registrations in different virtual worlds.

Pros and cons of a dating community

The advantages of a dating community are obvious. There is usually a very large pool of users who are single or who want to flirt and date. This results in each user having multiple flirt partners concurrently. The disadvantage of online dating communities is the anonymity that the Internet affords the users. It’s easy to provide false personal information, which may become a problem in the long run when users meet in real life. This can be very disappointing when your hot flirt partner is totally different in real life than online!

Can I Sue Over a Prescribed Medication? #medical #malpractice #lawyers

Can I Sue Over a Prescribed Medication?

Prescription medications are invaluable for countless patients, but often these medications cause serious side effects. A prescription needs to be properly written, filled, and administered, or any resulting harm to the patient may lead to a lawsuit.

As almost any pharmaceutical company advertisement will tell you, prescribed medications often come with side effects that can be pretty significant. If these side effects aren’t properly considered or disclosed, or if there is a mistake in the prescription process, those errors can form the basis of a viable medical malpractice lawsuit or product liability claim.

Prescription Drugs and Health Care Provider Duties

A “side effect” is essentially a symptom that is unrelated to the condition for which the medication was taken. Some of the more serious examples of side effects include organ damage, depression, suicidal thoughts and even death.

When doctors prescribe medications, they have a legal duty to assess:

  • the relative benefits and risks of the medication in light of the patient’s overall health
  • the relationship of the prescription to other medications being taken by the patient, and
  • the medication’s known side effects.

When pharmacists dispense prescribed medications, they must correctly read the doctor’s prescription and fill it with the correct medication in the properly-prescribed dosage.

And finally, when prescribed medications are administered by way of an injection in a doctor’s office or hospital setting, the nurses and other care providers must administer the correct medication in the proper dosage and with the medically accepted protocol.

If your claim is based on a failure-to warn-theory, you must show that your doctor did not take proper steps to advise you of the side effects or other complications you’re now experiencing.

Prescription Drugs and Medical Malpractice

The failure of a doctor, pharmacist or nurse to comply with any of the above-mentioned duties may provide the basis for a medical malpractice lawsuit if certain elements can be proven.

First, you will need to establish that you took the medication in strict accordance with the instructions provided to you.

Second, if your claim is based on a failure-to warn-theory, you must show that your doctor did not take proper steps to advise you of the side effects or other complications you’re now experiencing.

Third, if your claim is based on a dispensing error, you must prove that the medication dispensed by the pharmacist was different from the medication prescribed by your doctor in type and/or dosage.

Fourth, if your claim is based on wrongful administration of the medication by a nurse, you must establish that the nurse either injected the wrong medication or administered it in an improper manner. (Note: In this situation, you’d probably be suing the hospital for malpractice .)

Fifth, you will likely need expert testimony to prove a causal link between the medication error and your resulting harm.

And finally, you will be required to show that you have suffered damages that are compensable under the law.

If you succeed in proving your case, you will usually be entitled to recover damages for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost earnings and loss of the enjoyment of normal life activities.

Prescription Drugs and Product Liability

In addition to (or instead of) an action for medical malpractice, depending on the facts of your situation you may be able to bring a product liability claim, if you can establish that:

  • the prescribed medication was defectively manufactured
  • the medication was defectively designed, or
  • the manufacturer failed to provide adequate warning of known risks and side effects.

This type of claim is typically brought against the pharmaceutical company that designed, manufactured and sold the medication, and a lawsuit like this also usually requires expert testimony to establish liability and causation.

Taking Action

If you’re suffering any ill effects after taking a prescribed medication, the first thing you need to do is talk to your doctor, especially if what you’re experiencing is beyond mild, anticipated side effects.

It’s also a good idea to start documenting the situation, which means writing down everything your doctor, pharmacist and, if applicable, the administering nurse says and does in connection with your prescription. If you suspect that any of these health care professionals failed to fulfill their legal duties in connection with your prescription, it may be time to discuss your potential case with an experienced medical malpractice attorney. Campus Rep Jobs: What They Are & How to Get One #college #reps

Campus Rep Jobs: What They Are How to Get One

Newsflash: college is expensive. Fall semester is just around the corner, and if you’re like thousands of other collegiettes, you’re trying to figure out how you’ll keep from going broke between now and winter break. If you’re looking for a fun, resume-boosting way to make money. then a campus representative job might be the right choice for you!

What is a campus representative?

Campus representatives (also referred to as a “brand representatives,” “brand managers,” or “brand ambassadors”) are responsible for spreading the word about the company they represent. Their primary goal is to help with marketing programs on campus, occasionally even hosting workshops and throwing events to promote a brand or company. In a typical campus rep job, the company will send you a box of items to hand out to students all over your campus. Inside those boxes are advertising tools, or company swag—things like T-shirts, koozies, stickers, sunglasses, hats, etc. The ideal campus rep will give these things to students while talking up whatever brand they’re representing, in order to help that company appeal to the college demographic. Intern Queen Lauren Berger calls campus representative positions “the other internship ,” explaining that they’re equally impressive to add to your resume but require less time and effort, because you get to choose your own schedule.

Thousands of college students in campuses all over the country are offered store credit, free stuff, or actual cash by promoting brands on campus. All kinds of companies seek college students for these positions, from Disney to Chipotle to Victoria’s Secret and more. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s probably a campus rep position for that field!

For one thing, there can be financial benefits! These benefits vary from company to company. Sometimes you’re paid by the hour, sometimes with a stipend at the end of the semester, or sometimes you aren’t paid at all but receive discounts and store credit instead.

Hannah Sellers, a junior at the University of Arkansas, is the campus manager for Vince Camuto through Youth Marketing Connection. a youth marketing agency that connects companies and brands to today’s youth and college demographic both online and offline. Hannah started as the campus manager last spring, and through her position she earned a paycheck and store credit to use on the Vince Camuto website.

Gabbie Cirelli, a sophomore at UNC-Chapel Hill, just landed a campus rep job for ASOS. a UK-based clothing company. Gabbie will earn a salary and will receive clothes and accessories from the site that she’s expected to wear and advertise around campus. “I think the freebies are definitely the biggest perks, and the fact that you’re getting paid to talk about and deal with clothes – something very easy for someone like me who loves shopping,” Gabbie says. “I also personally love ASOS as a brand, so I lucked out in getting a job with a company whose clothes I can not only wear, but afford.”

Apple is well known for its campus rep program. This position pays an average of $11 an hour, up to 15 hours a week, and you get an Apple laptop to play around with for the duration of your time as a campus rep .

The second major benefit of taking on a campus rep position: once you finish, you can use the experience, skills, and attributes from this position to get another job or internship in the future! As an Apple campus rep, you will be hosting workshops, throwing events, and doing everything possible to build a relationship between your campus – including everyone from students to faculty and staff – and Apple. The resume line basically writes itself!
