Solved Double vs Single sided ram

Hey, you’re the one that started this thread & you’re the one that claimed to know all about single vs double sided. You also chose the name “Big E Custom PC” which sounds like it could be the name of a computer shop, so it would seem that you came here as an expert to set all of us straight.

I gave you my answer which I believe to be correct:

single sided = memory chips on one side of RAM module
double sided = memory chips on both sides of RAM module

There is no rocket science involved in trying to figure it out. The rest of the crap you went on about involves “ranking” & that is a completely different issue. I posted a link that explains what that is all about. The following was taken from your favorite site to plagiarize, Wikipedia. it describes what single & double sided RAM is & how the terms *may* cause confusion when it comes to ranking:

“DIMMs are often referred to as “single-sided” or “double-sided” to describe whether the DRAM chips are located on one or both sides of the module’s printed circuit board (PCB). However, these terms may cause confusion, as the physical layout of the chips does not necessarily relate to how they are logically organized or accessed.”

It goes on to say that: “JEDEC decided that the terms “dual-sided,” “double-sided,” or “dual-banked” were not correct when applied to registered DIMMs.”

I’m sure you know what JEDEC is AND the difference between registered & un-registered DIMMs.

Pin one is usually labled on the ram stick. locate it and count from there. then visually inspect the pins corresponding circutry. If it is used on the stick it is double. If it is not then it is single. Don’t give up so easily.

I’m looking on a 30pin stick and just can’t find those pins.

Do I take it that what you say holds true with all memory sticks from 72pin on up?

And visually inspect the pins corresponding circuitry? Sure I will. Identify the pins, scrape labels off, get out a magnifying glass, etc.

My last question for the moment is how to do this if buying online or how to talk a store clerk into lettin’ me do all this?

I may just continue to do it the hard way by looking up the specs for the system and matching the memory to those specs.

Big E, you’re confusing your terms so you may as well just join the “getting it wrong” club along with all the rest of ’em. I sure hope you don’t run your own PC business?

Single-sided is exactly what it sounds like – the memory chips are only on ONE side of the RAM module. Double-sided is just that – the memory chips are on BOTH sides of the RAM module.

However, what you’re describing is “ranking”. specifically, single rank vs dual rank. A RAM module can be single-rank, dual-rank or quad-rank depending on the chip configuration.

A single-sided module is always single-rank. Double-sided can be single-rank, dual-rank, or quad-rank.

I don’t claim to know everything, but just like all of you, I try to offer what I do know. And most of you don’t seem to know much more than I do.

Thank you! That wasn’t so hard. It’s kinda funny what it takes to get you guys to just spill the beans. I’ve been on many sites trying to get someone to just tell me what they know about ram. And so far no one has said it quite as well as JAM. Sorry I had to spank the monkey a little bit, but I guess some poeple do their best work when their pissed off. )

All you had to do was ask the question, not act the expert as you did in your original post.

Then you told me to count from pin1 (doh!) and not to give up so easily. Your entire post assumes each and every ram stick ever produced has pins 33 and 45 doing the same job.

You have absolutely no idea of what you’re talking about so don’t think for one second we’re not gonna call you on it.

We’re not mad at you but we will tromp all over a post that only serves to confuse others.
