Residential Windows, Doors and Skylights

Current Specification Effective Date: January 1, 2015

  • The current criteria were finalized in January 2014.
  • New performance levels (PDF, 238.86 KB) are effective as of January 1, 2016 for windows, doors, and skylights in all climate zones.
  • Windows, doors and skylights must meet U-Factor and, where applicable, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) requirements based on climate zone. In addition, doors must meet U-Factor and, where applicable, SHGC requirements based on glazing level (amount of glass).
  • Windows, doors and skylights originally qualified for the ENERGY STAR label in March, 1998.

What should I look for when buying windows, doors skylights?

Every ENERGY STAR window, door and skylight is independently certified and verified to perform at levels that meet or exceed energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. EPA. But how do you know which windows work in your climate? The following tips will help you buy with confidence.

Purchasing Tips

Shopping for new windows, doors, and skylights can be a confusing process. ENERGY STAR makes it simple! Follow these five tips to ensure your windows, doors, and skylights deliver savings and comfort you’ll enjoy.

Look for the ENERGY STAR label for your climate zone. All ENERGY STAR certified products must display the ENERGY STAR label. Check the label to make sure the product you are considering is certified to meet the criteria for your area. The ENERGY STAR label appears on the product next to the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label:

ENERGY STAR Qualified
in Highlighted Regions

Official ENERGY STAR label (and NFRC Label) for a window qualifying in the Northern and North-Central climate zones.

ENERGY STAR Qualified
in All 50 States

Ask for ENERGY STAR when ordering. When you’re ordering in a showroom, make sure to ask for a product that is certified to meet the ENERGY STAR criteria for your climate zone. You can choose ENERGY STAR certified windows in a variety of framing materials to suit your needs.

  • Get a deal. In addition to the long-term energy savings you’ll enjoy, you may be able to take advantage of financial incentives that lower your initial investment:
    • Many utilities provide financial incentives for purchasing ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors and skylights. Look for local rebates and other promotions in your area .
    • Claim federal tax credits for installing ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors or skylights or making certain other energy efficiency improvements to your home.
    • Keep in mind that the cost of complete window replacement can vary. Be sure to get quotes from several installers. Different dealers may quote difference prices for the same product. When interviewing contractors, ask them to break down the price quote by labor and materials. ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors and skylights may cost more than non-certified products, but the labor involved should be comparable for both.
    • If your house is older than 1978, be sure to look for contractors who are certified to handle lead paint .

How to Change Code for Garage Door Opener

Secure your garage by changing the door code from time to time.

If you think someone knows the code to open your garage door or your remote has been stolen, it is time to change the code on your garage door opener. Newer garage door openers have a keypad in addition to the remote, which makes it slightly easier to change the code. If you have an older garage door that is only operated by a remote, you must physically move the switches inside the remote and door opener to change the code.

        Garage Doors with a Keypad

        1

Place a ladder beneath the garage door’s motor unit to reach the unit.

        2

Press the learn button located on the side of the motor and hold it down. Release the button when the light beside it goes out to remove the old code from its memory.

        3

Push the learn button on the motor again, so its light comes on again. Enter the desired code on your keypad on the garage wall. The motor unit’s light blinks to indicate that the new code has been accepted.

        4

Press the learn button on the motor once more, so the light on the motor lights up again. Press a button on your remote. The motor unit’s light blinks to indicate the remote has been programmed with the new code. Repeat this step to program all other remotes.

        Garage Doors without a Keypad

        1

Take the cover off of the garage door’s remote control to expose the switches inside the remote. Repeat to change the code in all additional remotes.

        2

Move the switches inside the remote to change the code. Replace the cover on the remote control.

        3

Place a ladder beneath the garage door’s motor unit. Move the switches on the motor to change the code to match the code in the remote control.

How to Change the Hydrostatic Fluid in a Cub Cadet Lawn Mower

Use the proper transmission fluid for your hydrostatic transmission.

Cub Cadet has been making hydrostatic transmission lawn tractors for decades. International Harvester manufactured its first models under the brand name International Cub Cadet, which was later shortened to Cub Cadet. Hydrostatic transmissions in newer models of Cub Cadet lawn mowers are sealed during manufacturing and fluid cannot be changed. International Cub Cadets manufactured in the 1970s with a hydrostatic transmission recommend only changing the transmission filter every 100 hours of use. Transmission fluid can gel in these older machines. Changing it will improve performance.

        1

Wipe grass and grease from the rear transmission cover. You do not want any debris getting into the transmission when you remove the cover. Clean the area around the transmission filter with a clean rag.

        2

Lower the mowing deck. Place the pan under the transmission filter. Remove the filter with the filter wrench by turning it counterclockwise. Place the filter in the pan so fluid doesn’t leak out onto the floor.

        3

Place the drain pan under the rear of the transmission. Remove the fill plug on the rear transmission cover with the ratchet. Remove the bottom three bolts holding the transmission cover on and loosen all of the other bolts, but do not remove them.

        4

Slide the screwdriver under the cover by gently tapping it with the hammer. Pry the cover off. It will be adhered tightly and will take time to remove. Be prepared for the cover to come loose and a deluge of fluid to drain out. By only removing the bottom three bolts, the fluid will be direct downward toward the drain pan. Drain all of the fluid.

        5

While the hydrostatic fluid is draining, install the new transmission filter. Apply a thin layer of transmission fluid to the gasket of the filter. Screw the filter onto the tractor until the gasket seats. Unscrew the filter, and then re-tighten until the gasket touches the base. Turn another half turn. The filter is now installed.

        6

Remove the rest of the bolts and clean the inside of the transmission cover. Scrape the gasket off the cover and the tractor with the putty knife. Remove all of it so that the new gasket will seal without leaks.

        7

Inspect inside the transmission for gelled fluid. Wipe out any gelled fluid with a clean rag. Spray the bolts and bolt holes with carburetor cleaner. Wipe them off with a clean rag. Remove all the debris.

        8

Apply a thin layer of transmission fluid to the gasket with your finger, coating both sides. Position the gasket on the rear cover and bolt the cover back onto the tractor until you have a tight seal.

        9

Fill the transmission with new transmission fluid rated for your machine. When the fluid runs out the fill hole, the transmission is full. See your operator’s manual for the correct type of fluid. Replace the fill plug.

        10

Raise the mower deck. Start your tractor and check for leaks around the rear cover and filter. If you see any leaks, tighten the filter or bolts where fluid is leaking. Drive the tractor for three or four minutes to warm the fluid and work it through the system.

        11

Park the tractor on a level surface and turn off the engine. Remove the fill plug and check the fluid level. It will be low because fluid has pooled in the transmission filter. Add more fluid until it runs out the fill plug. Replace the fill plug.

        Things You Will Need

        • Rags
        • Drain pan, 3 gallon or larger
        • Transmission oil filter
        • Filter wrench
        • Ratchet with socket
        • Flat-head screwdriver
        • Hammer
        • Transmission fluid
        • Putty knife
        • Carburetor cleaner
        • Rear cover gasket

        Warnings

        • Only work on your mower when it is turned off and the key is removed.
        • Follow all safety precautions in your machine’s operator manual.

Review Article Clues to the functions of mammalian sleep

        Jerome M. Siegel 1

        Abstract

The functions of mammalian sleep remain unclear. Most theories suggest a role for non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in energy conservation and in nervous system recuperation. Theories of REM sleep have suggested a role for this state in periodic brain activation during sleep, in localized recuperative processes and in emotional regulation. Across mammals, the amount and nature of sleep are correlated with age, body size and ecological variables, such as whether the animals live in a terrestrial or an aquatic environment, their diet and the safety of their sleeping site. Sleep may be an efficient time for the completion of a number of functions, but variations in sleep expression indicate that these functions may differ across species.

29 Eye-Opening Facts About Dating That Will Change The Way You View Relationships

Being single again for the first time in a hot minute, I decided to do some research on the world out there that awaits us lonely wanderers what the dating experts say on relationships. In doing so, I uncovered some interesting, alarming and a couple sadly unsurprising statistics. Some of them confirmed awful fears (and made the feminist in me cringe) and others made me want to hi-five a million angels.

I don t personally agree with all of these things (and some of it s a little dubious to me), but here s what the experts say about dating. As they say, knowledge is power:

        1. You can’t put a timeline on a relationship, and there’s no telling when exclusivity is right for you, but according to a study from Lisa Daily, most couples get into an “exclusive” relationship after 6 to 8 dates.

        2. Daily’s study also suggests that men know when they’re falling for someone as soon as three dates in. Women take longer, reporting the same feelings around date 14. Interestingly, that’s exactly the same time that most couples say they exchange keys to each other’s homes: between the 12th and 14th date.

        3. Singledom is inertia. According to a commonly cited statistic from Neil Clark Warren, over half of people who report their relationship status as “single” say they haven’t been on a date in two years. There’s potentially a reason for this. When polled, 40% of men say that they are “scared” when first interacting with a potential mate.
