What I like best is the call block button feature. As the call with an unknown number is coming in, all I have to do is press the Call Block number and the number is placed in the Call Block list. So far, everything has been fine. The only drawback that I have seen is that when you are checking multiple answering machine messages from a phone instead of the base, you cannot delete individual messages. You must delete them all. From the base, you can delete individual messages. Other than that, it is working fine and my wife is happy with it.

    Great phones- love the call block Posted by: bradrobster from: on I always go with Panasonic because I am on conference calls all day long and I wear out these things. This is made well, all the units have full duplex speakerphones in them and that is a MUST if you are going to use a speakerphone in talking to anyone. We really love the call block feature where all the pesky telemarketers can be blocked so they don’t even ring through anymore once blocked.

Fewer and fewer new models include the headset jack. I have been buying Panasonic phones for years. I usually upgrade once every 3 years or so (I use the phone a lot). The new model is a lot like the old models. The volume button on the side is nice, so you don’t have to search for volume in the menu. The clarity is good. I recommend this as a basic, single line phone at a reasonable price.

This has all of the features as my old one, but I love the talking caller ID. The backlit keys are a plus for dark rooms. Plus there are less soft keys which makes this system easier to use. Simple names break into two lines so difficult to read. Building a phone book is extremely tedious and time-consuming. There must be a better way. We’ll keep it because it is just our backup phone.     Knowledge Gap Theory

    This theory was first proposed in 1970 by Philip J Tichenor, then Associate Professor of Journalism and mass Communication, George A. Donohue, Professor of Sociology and Clarice. N Olien, Instructor in Sociology, all three researchers in the University of Minnesota. They defined the Knowledge Gap theory, as the infusion of mass media information into a social system increases higher socioeconomic status segments tend to acquire this information faster than lower socioeconomic status population segments so that gap in knowledge between the two tends to increase rather than decrease.” In simple words it means, as the access to mass media increases those particular segments of population inevitable gain information faster and hence the wide gap increases with the lower economic status of the population. The world is yet to see the complete effect of the new technologies but as the globe turns out more technological and the expense rises, it more goes out of the league of the poor. As a result the knowledge gap also widens and the people of the higher economic class gain the benefits more. If the Information services are not made equal for the entire society, this gap of information will increase over the years.

    In this theory knowledge is treated as any other commodity which is not distributed equally throughout the society and the people at the top of the ladder has more easy access to it. This theory was used in the presidential election and it is was seen that when a new idea invades in the society, the people of the higher strata understand it better and hence the gap expands. But, events such as debates, free talks may help to reduce this gap.

    Few reasons have been stated of why this pattern of gap exist

    1. Communication Skills As a person receives more education, his communication skill increases and hence gathering information becomes easier for him. Along with this reading, understanding mad memory skills also become better and thus he understands the issues of various spheres better.

    2. Stored information Via classrooms, textbooks, discussions, educated person is exposed to much more topics than a less educated person and hence his awareness is more.

    3. Relevant Social Contact A person with more education has more social integration. This helps him to counter various perspectives, diverse stories etc which makes his understanding of public issues better.

    4. Selective Exposure An educated person knows well of how to use optimum use of a medium while on the other hand a person with no knowledge is unlikely to know it. Hence he will be less aware of the issues around the world and less interested and may not also know of how it may affect him.

    5. Media Target Markets For every product, news or any commodity a certain segment is targeted and it is usually the higher strata of the society who is targeted and hence the lower strata remains unaware.

    Ways of Reducing the Gap

    George A. Donohue and his other colleagues by the end of 1975 came up with three variables after a survey on local and national issues, which will help to reduce the gap and that failed this theory upto a certain extent.

    • Impact of local issues It was seen that local issues that directly impacted the people had aroused more of social concern than national issues that did not have such a great impact and hence in these issues widened gap could be reduced.
    • Level of social conflict surrounding the issue Until a communication breakdown, issues with more perceived conflict tends to grab more attention and weakening the knowledge gap hypothesis.
    • Homogeneity of the community If it is a homogeneous community, the gap tends to be lesser than a wider heterogeneous community.

    Core Assumptions and Statements:
    The knowledge gap can result in an increased gap between people of lower and higher socioeconomic status. The attempt to improve people’s life with information via the mass media might not always work the way this is planned. Mass media might have the effect of increasing the difference gap between members of social classes.
    Tichenor, Donohue and Olien presented five reasons for justifying the knowledge gap:
    1) People of high socioeconomic status have better communication skills, education, reading, comprehending and remembering information.
    2) People of higher socioeconomic status can store information more easily or remember the topic form background knowledge.
    3) People of higher socioeconomic status might have a more relevant social context.
    4) People of higher socioeconomic status are better in selective exposure, acceptance and retention.
    5) The nature of the mass media itself is that it is geared toward persons of higher socioeconomic status.

    Media presenting information should realize that people of higher socioeconomic status get their information in a different way than lower educated people. Furthermore, this hypothesis of the knowledge gap might help in understanding the increased gap between people of higher socioeconomic status and people of lower socioeconomic status. It can be used in various circumstances.
    The methods used in media researches concerned with knowledge gap are surveys of mass media and tests of knowledge.

    Offered by the School of International Service. and founded in 1968 as the first International Communication program in the country, this innovative program provides students with interdisciplinary course offerings and professional skills training, focusing on emergent and vital topics in international communication. The curriculum allows students to explore themes including intercultural relations, cross-cultural communication, international exchange, global technology governance, cultural and public diplomacy, health communication, and global media studies.

    Admission to the Program

    Students applying for admission to this program must have had a strong undergraduate major or minor in social and behavioral sciences or communication. For further information, contact the International Communication Division at 202-885-1621.

    Applicants must hold an accredited bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least a B+ (3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale) and should have had at least 24 credit hours of social science coursework relevant to international studies. Students who do not meet these minimum requirements, if otherwise admissible, may be assigned additional coursework in excess of degree requirements specified at the time of admission.

    The application deadline for fall admission is January 15; for spring admission October 1 (September 15 for international students). Admitted students may defer matriculation for no longer than two semesters provided that a written request for deferment is submitted to and approved by the SIS Graduate Admissions Office.

    All applicants whose native language is English or those whose degrees are from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English are required to submit results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Non-native English speakers are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless they hold a degree from a U.S.-accredited institution before enrollment at SIS. The minimum TOEFL score for full admissions consideration is 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 600 on the paper-based test (PBT). The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. Fall applicants should plan to take the appropriate test no later than December to ensure full consideration of the application by the January deadline.

    All applicants must submit two letters of reference evaluating undergraduate academic performance and suitability for graduate study in international affairs, at least one of which should be from an academic source. A resume should be included in the application. Applicants must submit transcripts from all institutions attended. Cultural factors are considered in evaluating transcripts and examination results.

    Requests for the transfer of a maximum of 6 graduate credit hours from other accredited institutions to be applied to a master’s degree must be completed in the student’s first semester in the graduate program at American University. A minimum grade of B in each course is required for transfer. Transfer courses must have been completed within five years of admission and must fulfill stated requirements of the degree program.

    Degree Requirements

    • 39 credit hours of approved graduate coursework with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00, including a minimum of 6 credit hours in the core including one theory course, 18 credit hours in a concentration selected from offerings in SIS or other teaching units of the university, 6 credit hours in research methods, 3 credit hours in economics, 3 elective credit hours, and a 3 credit hour capstone experience.
    • Capstone experience: demonstration of critical thinking, research and writing skills through completion of a master’s thesis, substantial research paper requirement, or practicum. All courses taken to fulfill this requirement must be passed with a grade of B or better.
      • Thesis: 6 credit hours of thesis credit and submission of the thesis
      • Substantial research paper requirement: 3 credit hours
      • Practicum: 3 credit hours
    • Evidence of professional experience in the field: Relevant internship or work experience must be certified.

    Admission to the Program

    Applications are submitted to both SIS and Kogod. Students must be admitted separately to each program. While students are encouraged to apply for admission to both programs simultaneously, students can apply to the second program after admission and matriculation in the first program. Students must be admitted to the second program and begin their studies prior to conferral of the degree from the first program. Applicants to the MBA program must also have completed two undergraduate courses, one in micro and one in macro economics (or the graduate equivalent), prior to entering the program.

    The full-time MBA is a cohorted two-year program. During the first year of the MBA students complete 26 or 29 credit hours in Kogod, and during the second year of the MBA students, including the MBA capstone in the spring semester. Sequencing and timing of SIS coursework depends on the chosen program. Generally, dual degree students begin their academic programs at Kogod, but this is not required. The dual degree between SIS and Kogod may not be completed in conjunction with any other dual degrees at AU.

    SIS Degree Requirements

    • Dual degree students may count up to 9 credit hours from their Kogod degree requirements toward their SIS degree requirements with approval of the SIS program director. This typically includes the 6 credit hour methodology requirement and the 3 credit hour elective. Students must otherwise complete all requirements as listed for the SIS graduate degree. The SIS MA degrees are built around a multidisciplinary curriculum focused on preparing students for a wide variety of careers in global service, including public, private, and non-profit semesters. MA/MBA students can specialize in areas at SIS that include international development, security, global governance, conflict resolution, global environmental policy, regional studies, U.S. foreign policy, and public diplomacy.     A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs of the network. For example, some networks require that one computer be set aside to manage communications between all the other computers. A dedicated server could also be a computer that manages printer resources. Note, however, that not all servers are dedicated. In some networks, it is possible for a computer to act as a server and perform other functions as well.

    In the Web hosting business, a dedicated server is typically a rented service. The user rents the server, software and an Internet connection from the Web host.
