What to Do If You’ve Been Fired for Whistleblowing

A whistleblower is an employee who reports a violation of the law by his or her employer. The violation may be against the reporting employee, as with sexual harassment claims, or may be a general violation such as unlawful pollution practices against environmental law.

Remember, you should always check with a whistleblower lawyer in your area to learn about specific whistleblower laws in your particular state.

Whistleblower Protection Laws

There are numerous federal and state whistleblower protection laws that exist to protect both public and private employees who are fired for reporting violations of the law and/or misconduct against their employers. For instance, federal whistleblower protection laws — such as key environment laws including the federal Clean Air Act, Toxic Substance Control Act, The Pollution Prevention Act, and other OSHA Whistleblower Protections — make it unlawful to fire employees in retaliation for filing a claim or reporting violations, including health and safety hazards, and financial misappropriation.

Unlawful to Fire Whisteblowers for Whisteblowing

In addition to federal whistleblower protection laws, most states make it unlawful to fire employees for reporting employer violations and other acts of misconduct. These laws vary, however, with respect to who is protected (whether public employees or private employees) and to whom the protection is afforded (such as co-workers and other business entities). Also, it’s important to note that some state laws require timely filing of whistleblowing claims, such as within 90-days or 120-days. In California, for instance, if you are filing a general whistleblowing claim. you must file it within two years of the alleged retaliatory action.

You may file a complaint with OSHA if your employer retaliates against you by taking unfavorable personnel action because you engaged in protected activity relating to workplace safety and health, commercial motor carrier safety, pipeline safety, air carrier safety, nuclear safety, the environment, asbestos in schools, corporate fraud, SEC rules or regulations, railroad carrier safety or security, or public transportation agency safety or security.

Employment and Salary Trends for Virginia Photographers

Virginia is home to 1,120 salaried photographers averaging $32,500 per year, down from $41,020 in 2009, when the state was home to 1,220 photographers. It is important to note that many professionals in this field are self-employed, so it is safe to assume that the population of photographers in the state is much higher. These individuals typically earn more and enjoy greater employment growth as well. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the “Independent Artists, Writers, and Performers” ‘industry’ has the third highest concentration of employment for photographers and they earn an average of $47,180 per year.

Nationwide, the median pay for photographers is $30,490 per year. Employment for photographers is projected to grow three percent for the 2014-2024 decade, which is slower than the average for all occupations. At this rate, the industry is expected to add around 3,900 new jobs in the coming years. Overall growth will be limited because of the decreasing cost of digital cameras and the increasing number of amateur photographers and hobbyists, says the Bureau.

In addition, stock photographic services available online give individuals and businesses access to stock photographs for a fee or subscription, possibly dampening demand for photographers. Declines in the newspaper industry will reduce demand for news photographers to provide still images for print, says the Bureau. Projected growth, says the BLS, will be due to the demand for portrait photographers, which will persist as people continue to want new portraits. In addition, corporations will continue to require the services of commercial photographers to develop compelling advertisements to sell products.

About the Program

This program provides extensive theory and hands-on training pertaining to the heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning fields. This growing trades area changes rapidly and this program incorporates studies dealing with current HVAC topics including green technologies. It also provides foundational skills in general sheet metal, gas, and electrical. The practical courses taking place in the HVAC Centre are designed to train students to enter the field with all the skills necessary for employment. Admission Procedures

  • An academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.

  • A sound mathematical and English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.

  • Applicants are advised that manual dexterity and the ability to work at heights and in various climatic conditions are frequent prerequisites for employment in this field. The physical demands of this program reflect industry requirements (e.g. lifting, carrying, climbing, etc.) and require students to be physically fit in order to participate adequately.
  • Students are expected to demonstrate the same attention to attendance, punctuality and conduct as would be required by the business or industry in which they expect to be employed.
  • Students are required to provide their own CSA-approved footwear, hard hat, safety glasses, and specified hand tools. The college provides all other tools required. Students will have the opportunity to buy their specified hand tools in a kit during the first week of the program for a discounted cost. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student s Conestoga transcript. Credit Information

  • Most recent statements from your bills, indicating minimum payments and account numbers.
  • Name, Address, and Phone number of your landlord, or 12 months cancelled rent checks.
  • If Applicable: Should you have no credit. Copies or your most recent utility bills will be needed.
  • If Applicable: Copy of complete Bankruptcy and Discharge Papers.
  • If Applicable: If you co-signed for a mortgage, car, credit card, etc, need 12 months cancelled checks. front and rear, indicating you are not making payments.

  • Copy of Drivers License .
