What should I look for when buying windows, doors skylights?

Every ENERGY STAR window, door and skylight is independently certified and verified to perform at levels that meet or exceed energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. EPA. But how do you know which windows work in your climate? The following tips will help you buy with confidence.

Purchasing Tips

Shopping for new windows, doors, and skylights can be a confusing process. ENERGY STAR makes it simple! Follow these five tips to ensure your windows, doors, and skylights deliver savings and comfort you’ll enjoy.

Look for the ENERGY STAR label for your climate zone. All ENERGY STAR certified products must display the ENERGY STAR label. Check the label to make sure the product you are considering is certified to meet the criteria for your area. The ENERGY STAR label appears on the product next to the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label:

in Highlighted Regions

Official ENERGY STAR label (and NFRC Label) for a window qualifying in the Northern and North-Central climate zones.

in All 50 States

Ask for ENERGY STAR when ordering. When you’re ordering in a showroom, make sure to ask for a product that is certified to meet the ENERGY STAR criteria for your climate zone. You can choose ENERGY STAR certified windows in a variety of framing materials to suit your needs.

  • Get a deal. In addition to the long-term energy savings you’ll enjoy, you may be able to take advantage of financial incentives that lower your initial investment:
    • Many utilities provide financial incentives for purchasing ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors and skylights. Look for local rebates and other promotions in your area .
    • Claim federal tax credits for installing ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors or skylights or making certain other energy efficiency improvements to your home.
    • Keep in mind that the cost of complete window replacement can vary. Be sure to get quotes from several installers. Different dealers may quote difference prices for the same product. When interviewing contractors, ask them to break down the price quote by labor and materials. ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors and skylights may cost more than non-certified products, but the labor involved should be comparable for both.
    • If your house is older than 1978, be sure to look for contractors who are certified to handle lead paint .

Energy is one of the most fundamental parts of our universe.

We use energy to do work. Energy lights our cities. Energy powers our vehicles, trains, planes and rockets. Energy warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music, gives us pictures on television. Energy powers machinery in factories and tractors on a farm.

Energy from the sun gives us light during the day. It dries our clothes when they’re hanging outside on a clothes line. It helps plants grow. Energy stored in plants is eaten by animals, giving them energy. And predator animals eat their prey, which gives the predator animal energy.

Everything we do is connected to energy in one form or another.

Energy is defined as: the ability to do work.

When we eat, our bodies transform the energy stored in the food into energy to do work. When we run or walk, we burn food energy in our bodies. When we think or read or write, we are also doing work. Many times it’s really hard work!

Cars, planes, light bulbs, boats and machinery also transform energy into work.

Work means moving something, lifting something, warming something, lighting something. All these are a few of the various types of work. But where does energy come from?

There are many sources of energy. In The Energy Story, we will look at the energy that makes our world work. Energy is an important part of our daily lives.

The forms of energy we will look at include:

    • Electricity
    • Biomass Energy – energy from plants
    • Geothermal Energy
    • Fossil Fuels – Coal, Oil and Natural Gas
    • Hydro Power and Ocean Energy
    • Nuclear Energy
    • Solar Energy
    • Wind Energy
    • Transportation Energy

We will also look at turbines and generators, at what electricity is, how energy is sent to users, and how we can decrease or conserve the energy we use. Finally, we’ll look at the newer forms of energy. and take a look at energy in the future.

You can start with Chapter 1: Energy – What Is It? or you can go to any of the other chapters.

Why Lease Solar for Your Home When You Can Buy?
    • A solar lease is just one more financial tool that is complex enough that you can t quite see what the real cost of it is. In 2009, groups of investors saw the opportunity to move into solar when local banks stopped making home equity loans and giving out business lines of credit. Solar leasing companies are money managers who are taking advantage of federal and state solar subsidies to earn higher profits than their money can earn sitting in real estate or stock market investments at the moment.

The Washington Post article “Why leasing solar panels may not be a good idea if you’re planning a home sale (Nov. 17, 2015)” says that potential buyers may be frightened by an existing solar lease on a home. They have to meet onerous credit requirements and make payments on the remainder of the lease term, often 10-20 years.

In contrast to owned panels that increase the value of a home, leased panels can scare off buyers or force you to buy out a lease in order to complete the home sale.

    • Cut that picture out and tape it to your refrigerator.
    • Imagine having it.
    • Picture the system on your own home.
    • Feel the independence, security and pride of solar ownership.
    • And call us when you re ready. We ll still be here, designing and selling the best solar equipment you ll ever need!

Now that local banks want to loan money again, leasing makes even less sense than it did a couple of years ago. Notice the sign outside our local bank here in Mt. Shasta:

Smart Energy Solutions: Increase Renewable Energy #renewable #energy #funds

Smart Energy Solutions: Increase Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is a practical, affordable solution to our electricity needs. By ramping up renewable energy, we can:

    • Reduce air pollution
    • Cut global warming emissions
    • Create new jobs and industries
    • Diversify our power supply
    • Decrease dependence on coal and other fossil fuels
    • Move America toward a cleaner, healthier energy future

We have the technologies and resources to reliably produce at least 40 percent of our electricity from renewable energy sources within the next 20 years, and 80 percent by 2050.

    Energy you can count on

    Photo: Tim Phillips/Flickr

Renewable energy is growing rapidly, with record numbers of new wind and solar installations coming online in the US every year. We can readily continue this rapid expansion of renewable energy by utilizing existing technologies, investing in improvements to our electricity system, and making smart policy decisions that move the country toward a clean energy future.

    Renewable electricity standards

    Photo: Oregon Department of Transportation

A Renewable Electricity Standard (RES)—also called a Renewable Portfolio Standard—requires utility companies to obtain a certain percentage of their electricity from renewable sources. To date nearly two-thirds of states have established them, with many meeting or exceeding their goals ahead of schedule.

UCS works to strengthen these existing standards, defend them from attacks by the fossil fuel industry, and expand RES policies to new states.

    Clean energy tax credits

Appropriate government incentives can be an important tool to speed deployment and reduce costs for clean energy technologies. In recent years there has been modest federal support for renewables like wind and solar power, but it pales in comparison to the large government subsidies that continue to prop up coal, natural gas, and nuclear power.

We need a fair and stable federal tax policy for renewable energy that will attract new investments and maintain the strong growth that renewables have experienced in recent years.

The Production Tax Credit (PTC)—a federal incentive that provides crucial financial support for the first ten years of a renewable energy facility’s operation—offers a striking example of the benefits, and challenges, of establishing smart government policies for renewable energy.

Toward a better, smarter electrical grid

    Photo: Diliff/Wikimedia Commons

The power lines, transformers, and control stations that make up our current energy grid are old, increasingly unreliable, and not adequate to handle a significant increase in renewable energy.

To move toward a cleaner energy economy, we must improve our nation’s electrical grid, as well as construct the transmission infrastructure needed to connect renewable energy facilities to cities and regions with high power demand.

    Land and wildlife impacts

Renewable energy facilities must be sited and developed in a way that effectively balances land conservation priorities and best protects wild animals and their habitats.

    Regional efforts

Several states have taken the lead in establishing strong renewable energy policies, most notably in California and the Western States. UCS is working to support and promote California’s efforts, as well as provide scientific analysis for expanding renewable energy in the Midwest and other regions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. How Does Inspire Slate Compare With “Real” Slate On Price?

    A. The answer to this question is …”what type of slate?” Most slate sold in the US is imported from China with a minimal warranty and of variable quality. Inspire Slate is similarly priced to a good quality guaranteed Spanish slate, but has many inherent benefits. One extremely relevant and cost-saving advantage is that fixing times are vastly reduced. Please see the Features and Benefits section of this site for further details.

    Q. How Is The Material Fastened To The Surface?

    A. Galvanized steel nails driven through the slate, either manually or by nail gun. No drilling, clipping or hooks required.

    Q. What Is The Minimum Roof Pitch Inspire Tiles Can Be Installed On?

    A. 14 degrees (on a fully-boarded roof). This is very useful for extensions and other applications where the available roof slope may be limited.

    Q. Why Are They Curved? A Natural Slate Is Flat.

    A. This is intentional. The induced camber flattens and creates a tight fit when nailed in place.

We know natural slate was used as a roofing material as far back as 1287 in North Wales, England. Slates extreme durability against weather and fire makes it one of the strongest and most durable roofing materials known to man. In the U.S. slate roofs were first introduced in the 1600’s around the Boston and Philadelphia regions and it wasn’t until the first U.S. quarry opened in Pennsylvania that slate became more common in that area. Availability, cost of materials, specialized labor and long installation times continues to make natural slate roofing a very expensive option as it has always been.

Inspire composite slate is created in high-pressure molds made from the finest natural slates and is a more practical roofing choice. Unlike stone slate, Inspire composite slate is lightweight, offers easy fast installation, normally looks better due to its color uniformity, and offers a 50 year lifetime limited warranty.

    Shake Roofing

Inspire composite shake roofing mimics natural Cedar wood split shake roofing. Unlike natural wood shake, Inspire roofing shake will not bend, warp, split, dry out, be a fire hazard, or blow off!

Natural split wood shakes are tapered in thickness and manufactured from western red cedar, cypress, pine and redwood trees. Cedar shakes and cedar shingles are available pressure treated with fire retardants and chemical preservatives for increased fire resistance, and to prevent premature rot and decay. Natural wood shake roofing is prone to insect damage and has a shortened lifespan in humid environments.

Many insurance companies will not insure wood shake roofing as it is a fire hazard. If installed over a specialized underlayment, Inspire roofing can be rated with Class-A fire resistance, which usually results in insurance savings.

    About Inspire

At Inspire, we place innovation above all. This has allowed us to deliver artistically beautiful, authentic and durable roofs over the years. Our industry-leading color palette and unmatched quality is the secret behind our success. We craft roof tiles that mirror the natural detail of slate and cedar in all their charm, delivering memorable elegance, stunning color and unparalleled toughness.

Exclusive: Fairmount Minerals explores $1 billion IPO – sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Fairmount Minerals Ltd, one of North America’s largest providers of industrial sand to the oil and gas industry, is exploring an initial public offering of around $1 billion that could come later this year, people familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The move makes Fairmount the latest sand mining company seeking to capitalize on strong investor demand for shares of services companies that are benefiting from the shale energy boom the United States is experiencing.

American Securities LLC, the private equity firm that controls Fairmount, has held talks with investment banks in recent weeks about an IPO that could value the mining company at over $6 billion, including debt, the people said.

Barclays Plc ( BARC.L ), Morgan Stanley ( MS.N ) and Wells Fargo & Co ( WFC.N ) are likely to lead the IPO of Fairmount Minerals, some of the sources added.

The sources asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. American Securities and Wells Fargo declined to comment, while representatives of Barclays and Morgan Stanley did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“We continually evaluate various strategic and capital structure alternatives to maximize shareholder value, but we can make no further comment at this time,” a Fairmount spokeswoman said.

The IPO would come after a rally in the shares of Fairmount’s publicly listed peers, including Emerge Energy Services LP ( EMES.N ), Hi Crush Partners LP ( HCLP.N ) and U.S. Silica Holdings Inc ( SLCA.N ).

Founded in 1986, Fairmount produces industrial sand, silica and related sand-based proppants used mainly in the oil and gas sector but also in industrial and recreational applications, ranging from water treatment to synthetic turf fields.

American Securities acquired a 51 percent equity stake in the Chesterland, Ohio-based company from its founders in 2010 for an undisclosed amount.

Last year, Fairmount replaced its chief executive officer of 17 years, Chuck Fowler, with Jenniffer Deckard, a former chief financial officer of the company.

In 2013, it also acquired FTS International Services LLC’s proppant business, which included sand mining plants, resin-coating plants facilities distribution terminals.

    Texas Approves Doubling Wholesale Electricity Rates – CBS Dallas #consumer, #ecowatch, #local, #news, #bills, #electric #bill, #electric #reliability #council #of #texas, #electricity #costs, #electricty, #energy #bill, #ercot, #public #utility #commission, #texas #public #utility #commission

Texas Approves Doubling Wholesale Electricity Rates

AUSTIN (AP) The Texas Public Utility Commission voted Thursday to raise the wholesale electricity price cap by 50 percent this summer in a move it hopes will spur construction of new power plants.

Texas officials say the state must boost generating capacity to meet growing demand in the next few years to help avoid rolling blackouts during peak periods such as hot summer days.

Supporters of the increase hope the lure of new profits will spur power companies to build more power plants. But consumer groups warn it could raise costs by billions of dollars, leading to higher electric bills for Texas households.

Thursday s vote by the three-member commission, all appointed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry, raises the wholesale rate on Aug. 1 from the current $3,000 per megawatt-hour to $4,500. And there could be more to come. Commissioners are already considering tripling the price to $9,000 in 2013.

The commission approved the August 1 increase on a 2-0 vote with commissioners Donna Nelson and Rolando Pablos supporting it. Commissioner Ken Anderson, who said he agrees with raising the cap, abstained because of concerns that Aug. 1 is too soon for some electric providers to adjust.

The cap increase affects wholesale rates within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid, which covers most of the state.

Texas AARP and other consumer groups say the commission hasn t studied the impact the rate increase could have on Texas households. Texas Industrial Energy Consumers, which includes refineries and chemical manufacturers, warned that a rate increase could create instability in pricing and drive smaller retail power providers out of business.

Pablos dismissed the warnings of skyrocketing household electric bills as alarmist rhetoric driven by special interests.

It s very clear a lot of the public don t understand the structure of the market and what we do here, Pablos said. Energy prosperity leads to economic prosperity.

We re doing this for the purpose of ensuring we have a higher quality of life for our citizens. A robust and reliable electric system will help us get there.

Although electric providers typically sign long-term contracts for electricity at a set price, they often fill in gaps on high-usage days buying wholesale on the spot market where prices are set several times an hour. That market can be compared to buying and selling on the stock market, where prices can be determined by sharp increases in demand and shortages.

Nelson said increasing the price cap by 50 percent doesn t translate into an automatic 50 percent increase on household electric bills. Texas competitive electricity market allows Texans to shop for the best plan they can get, she said.

Texas must find ways to make sure it can meet growing demands for electricity, she said.

The one thing we can t do is ignore the situation and move forward blindly based on a faith and a hope we ll have enough electricity, Nelson said, pointing the record heat that gripped the state in 2011. If last summer taught us anything, hope for the best, plan for the worst.
