2) FALSE
It is the person who is using the abusive behavior who is responsible for the abuse and for instilling fear in the teem victim. They may feel that no one will believe them.

They may believe they can stop the abuse.

They may fear the reaction of their parents.

They may feel that even if they are believed, there will be a stigma attached to being a victim. Teens don’t want this type of attention.

They may fear being “outed” if they are in a same-sex relationship.

Jenny L. Davis PhD on December 11, 2013

Quartz, a business and marketing website, recently released data on the Facebook dating app Are You Interested. which connects single people with others within the confines of their Facebook networks. Quartz’ data are based on a series of yes-or-no questions about who users are interested in, as well as response rates between users, once notified of a potential suitor. The data show that white men and Asian women receive the most interest, whereas black men and women receive the least amount of interest. The writers at Quartz summarize the findings as follows:

Unfortunately the data reveal winners and losers. All men except Asians preferred Asian women, while all except black women preferred white men. And both black men and black women got the lowest response rates for their respective genders.

Here s what the data looks like:

As a sociologist, I am entirely unsurprised that race matters, especially in such a personal process like dating/mating. However, these findings may come as a surprise to the (quite significant) segments of the population who identify as color-blind; those who label contemporary society post-racial.

And this is why dating sites are so cool. Social psychologists know that what people say and what they do have little empirical connection. Dating sites capture what we do, and play it back for us. They expose who we are, who we want, and of course, who we don’t want. As shown by Quartz, “we” fetishize Asian women while devaluing blacks.

With a schism between what people say and what they do; between what they say and what the unconsciously think, surveys of racial attitudes are always already quite limited. People can say whatever they want — that race doesn’t matter, that they don’t see color — but when it comes to selecting a partner, and the selection criteria are formalized through profiles and response decisions, we, as individuals and a society, can no longer hide from ourselves. The numbers blare back at us, forcing us to prosume uncomfortable cultural and identity meanings both personally and collectively.

Indeed, before anyone has answered anything, the architecture of online dating sites say a lot. Namely, by defining what can be preferences at all, they tell us which characteristics are the ones about which we are likely to care; about which we should care.

Both the user data and the presence of racial identification and preference in the first place are revealing, demolishing arguments about colorblindness and post-racial culture.

29 Eye-Opening Facts About Dating That Will Change The Way You View Relationships

Being single again for the first time in a hot minute, I decided to do some research on the world out there that awaits us lonely wanderers what the dating experts say on relationships. In doing so, I uncovered some interesting, alarming and a couple sadly unsurprising statistics. Some of them confirmed awful fears (and made the feminist in me cringe) and others made me want to hi-five a million angels.

I don t personally agree with all of these things (and some of it s a little dubious to me), but here s what the experts say about dating. As they say, knowledge is power:

1. You can’t put a timeline on a relationship, and there’s no telling when exclusivity is right for you, but according to a study from Lisa Daily, most couples get into an “exclusive” relationship after 6 to 8 dates.

2. Daily’s study also suggests that men know when they’re falling for someone as soon as three dates in. Women take longer, reporting the same feelings around date 14. Interestingly, that’s exactly the same time that most couples say they exchange keys to each other’s homes: between the 12th and 14th date.

3. Singledom is inertia. According to a commonly cited statistic from Neil Clark Warren, over half of people who report their relationship status as “single” say they haven’t been on a date in two years. There’s potentially a reason for this. When polled, 40% of men say that they are “scared” when first interacting with a potential mate.

Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. The exquisite marble structure in Agra, India, is a mausoleum, an enduring monument to the love of a husband for his favorite wife. It’s also an eternal testament to the artistic and scientific accomplishments of a wealthy empire.

Shah Jahan, “the King of the World,” took control of the Mughal Empire throne in 1628 very much in love with the queen he dubbed Mumtaz Mahal or “Chosen One of the Palace.” The poets at Agra’s Mughal court said her beauty was such that the moon hid its face in shame before her.

The Mughals were at the peak of their power and wealth during Shah Jahan’s reign, and India’s rich lode of precious gems yielded him much wealth and power. But he was powerless to stop Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth in 1631. Legend has it that she bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful tomb ever known.

Promise or no, Shah Jahan poured his passion and wealth into the creation of just such a monument. It is said that 20,000 stone carvers, masons, and artists from across India and as far as Turkey and Iraq were employed under a team of architects to build the Taj Mahal in the lush gardens on the banks of Agra’s Jamuna River. They completed the epic task between 1631 and 1648.

While the arch-and-dome profile of clean white marble has become iconic, other beauties lie in the Taj Mahal’s painstaking details: inlaid semiprecious stones and carvings and Koranic verse in calligraphy create an enchanting interior space where Shah Jahan came to visit his wife’s remains before he was eventually interred at her side.

The Taj Mahal’s familiar marble domes are framed by four minarets from which Muslims are called to prayer. Each is designed with a slight outward lean, presumably to protect the main mausoleum in case one of them should collapse.

Two red sandstone buildings also flank the main mausoleum on either side. One, to the west, is a mosque. The other is a former guesthouse.

These buildings are set within lush gardens, complete with an enormous reflecting pool that regularly does what no human has ever been able to accomplish—duplicate the beauty of the Taj Mahal.

Shah Jahan himself gazed upon that beautiful image until the end of his days—but as a prisoner, not a ruler. His son Aurangzeb seized the Mughal throne and imprisoned his father in Agra’s Red Fort (itself a World Heritage site and popular tourist attraction). Whether as consolation or torture, Shah Jahan commanded a view of the Taj Mahal from his window.

How to Get There

Agra is a major city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and well accustomed to visitors—some three million people visit the Taj Mahal each year. The city is accessible by bus, train, and (limited) air service and has a wide range of tourist amenities. Access to the Taj Mahal complex is on foot.

The Taj Mahal is a year-round attraction and often busy, though new ticketing systems have thinned crowds at peak times. Visitors in search of more solitude might try coming early or late in the day. One time NOT to visit is on Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed.

The mausoleum’s interior is a striking (if smallish) space that begs some leisurely exploration. But a good part of any visit to the Taj Mahal will be spent looking at the building from the outside. The mausoleum’s clean white marble shifts in color and tone to match the mood of the world outside—a transformation so enchanting that it’s worth lingering to gaze at the building in different conditions, such as the rosy glow of dawn or the magical light of a full moon.

9 facts about flirting that single — and married — people should know

Couples need to flirt, too.

Like Tinder, cats, and dying alone, flirting is usually associated with single people.

But couples need to know how to flirt, too.

After studying 164 married people for a 2012 study. University of Kentucky researcher Brandi Frisby noted that most of them flirted as a means of maintaining and emphasizing intimacy. Oftentimes, she wrote in her paper, married couples flirted to “create a private world with the spouse.”

People flirt for six different reasons.

Ricky Thakrar / flickr

In a 2004 review of the literature on flirting. Northern Illinois University professor David Dryden Henningsen identified six different motivations for the behavior:

• Sex: trying to get in bed
• Fun: treating it like a sport
• Exploring: trying to see what it would be like to be in a relationship
• Relational: trying to increase the intimacy of a relationship
• Esteem: increasing one’s own self esteem
• Instrumental: trying to get something from the other person

In that study, Henningsen asked 101 female and 99 male students to write out a hypothetical flirty conversation between a man and a woman, then identify the motivations for the things they said.

The behaviors broke down along gender norms: Men were significantly more likely to have a sexual motivation, while women tended to have a relational one.

Some conversation starters are better than others.

Andrew H. Walker / Getty

For a study in the journal Sex Roles. University of Alaska psychologist Chris L. Kleinke asked 600 respondents to rate the effectiveness of three varieties of opening lines in a flirtatious situation:

• “Pick-up” lines like “You must be a librarian, because I saw you checking me out”

• Open-ended, innocuous questions like “What do you think of this band?” or “What team are you rooting for?”

• Direct approaches like “You’re cute — can I buy you a drink?”

The responses were pretty evenly split along gender lines: While the men in the study tended to prefer the more direct approach, the women tended to prefer the open-ended, innocuous questions. Not surprisingly, very few people said they preferred the pick-up lines.

Men overestimate how interested women are.

Evidence from multiple studies supports the idea that, among heterosexual people, men tend to overperceive sexual interest from women, while women tend to underperceive sexual interest from men.

In other words, men tend to think women are into them when they aren’t, and women tend to not notice when men are into them.

In a 2000 analysis of several of these studies, University of Texas psychologists Martie G. Haselton and David M. Buss offered several explanations for this finding, including that men are raised to see more sex in their environments while women are brought up to be more modest, but psychologists still haven’t quite nailed down a perfect explanation for their observations.

The most attractive characteristics depend on gender.

Win McNamee / Getty

According to a 2011 study led by University of British Columbia psychologist Jessica Tracy, heterosexual men and women diverge greatly in the facial expression s they fancy.

After showing 1,041 people images of different facial expressions, Tracy found that:

• Happiness was the most attractive female expression, but one of the least attractive for men.

• Pride was the most attractive male expression, but one of the least attractive for women.

Subtlety goes a long way.

University of New Mexico evolutionary psychologist Steven W. Gangestad recently told Psychology Today that flirting is a “negotiation process” that happens after the first moments of attraction.

It’s a subtle sort of testing the waters. You don’t just say I’m attracted to you; are you attracted to me?

“It works much better to reveal [your attraction] and have it revealed to you in smaller doses,” Gangestad says. “The flirting then becomes something that enhances the attraction.”

It’s not about being the most attractive person in the room.

It’s about signaling that you’re available.

According to research from Webster University psychologist Monica Moore — who studied people’s flirting behavior at singles bars, shopping malls, and other places where young people meet — people who smiled and made eye contact with others were more likely to be approached than those who were simply good-looking.

Eye contact really helps.

Shandi-lee Cox / flickr

Without being too much of a creep, staring into another person’s eyes really does have effects.

In one study. researchers had 48 pairs of unacquainted, opposite-sex undergrads spend two minutes at each of the following tasks: 1) gazing at their partner’s eyes, 2) gazing at their partner’s hands, and 3) counting how many times their partner blinked.

When both pairs were doing the eye-gazing task at the same time — meaning they were looking at each other — they were far likely to report feelings of affection than when they were doing any other task.

People feel connected when they get past the small talk.

Dan Foy / flickr

You probably already know that asking questions of the person you fancy is a good idea.

But it’s all about the kind of questions you ask.

According to a widely cited 1997 study by State University of New York psychologist Arthur Aron. people feel more closely bonded when they ask each other intimate questions, as in “What roles do love and affection play in your life?” and “What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?”

Six months later, two of the participants (a tiny fraction of the original study group) even found themselves in love — an intriguing result, though not a significant one.

Now let’s work on your looks.

Examining Virginia Home Insurance Quotes

For property owners in Virginia. home insurance is something that you shouldn’t go without. While those who are still paying off their houses will be required by their lenders to have home insurance, Virginia residents living in houses they own outright should still be very wary of going without an insurance policy. Of course, in cases where you’re still paying on a mortgage, the minimum amount of coverage you carry will be set by your lender; however, having more than the minimum is often very beneficial. In most cases, it is price that dictates how much more than the minimum you carry. For Old Dominion residents who want more coverage or are looking to pay less for the coverage they already have, Virginia homeowners insurance quotes are likely to help.

Average Virginia Home Insurance Costs

From the Chesapeake Bay to the Cumberland Mountains, the Mother of Presidents has plenty of different landscapes for its residents to call home. However, no matter what kind of terrain your property overlooks in Virginia, home insurance is relatively reasonable when compared to rates in other states. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the average cost of Virginia home insurance is $662 a year. When you compare this to the national average of $804, the statewide rates seem pretty palatable. If the amount you pay for your homeowners insurance is much lower than the rate statewide, all we can say is “Congratulations.” If, on the other hand, the average home insurance rate is well under what you’re paying each year, there is not only an explanation, but something you can do about it.

How Virginia Homeowners Insurance Rates Are Determined

If you live in any of Virginia’s metropolitan areas or have a particularly expensive house, don’t be surprised if your annual rates are well above the statewide average. Insurance companies determine your premiums according to how much they are likely to pay out for your policy over its lifetime; since city homes and very expensive houses are more costly to repair, the higher rates given for such properties are there to make sure the insurance companies don’t spend more than they take in.

High assessment values and densely populated areas aren’t the only things that drive up the cost of home insurance. Virginia residents who have a poor credit rating, a history of making frequent claims on their policies, or who live in an area where damage caused by wind, fire, or snow is common will also have to pay more.

Lowering the Cost of Virginia Home Insurance

The good news is: Discounts and reduced rates can be had from any insurance provider in Virginia. Homeowners insurance is not only negatively affected by risk, but positively affected by a lack of risk. Installing fire safety equipment, alarm systems, and fire-resistant materials all reduce the risk for your insurance provider, and can often make you eligible for discounts. Other tactics like raising your credit score, remaining claim-free for a number of years, taking out multiple policies with the same provider, and upgrading older plumbing and electrical systems can also qualify you for discounts and rate reductions.

If you don’t qualify for any discounts and if your lender and/or wallet allows, you can also reduce your amount of coverage, lower your limits, or increase your deductible in order to lower your yearly homeowners insurance costs, but since each of these could end up costing you plenty out-of-pocket, getting quotes is often a safer path to rate reductions.

Save Money with Virginia Home Insurance Quotes

For every resident of Virginia, home insurance quotes are free for the asking; and not taking advantage of these useful tools is a terrible mistake. Insurance companies want to give you quotes so you can see the savings you’ll get if you use them as a provider, and because each company is likely to give you a different estimate for the same amount of coverage, examining the cost differences can sometimes lead to hundreds of dollars in savings every year. NetQuote makes getting home insurance quotes a snap; fill out a brief online form, and NetQuote will quickly match you with quotes from local insurance providers. Though not every homeowner will get quotes that are hundreds of dollars lower than their current rates, the fact is: Many do, and you could, too.

Date Rape Drugs

Adverse Effects of Club Drugs

Uncertainties about the sources, chemicals, and possible contaminants used to manufacture many club drugs make it extremely difficult to determine toxicity and associated medical consequences. Nonetheless, we do know that:

  • Coma and seizures can occur following use of GHB. Combined use with other drugs such as alcohol can result in nausea and breathing difficulties. GHB and two of its precursors, gamma butyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4 butanediol (BD), have been involved in poisonings, overdoses, date rapes, and deaths.
  • Rohypnol may be lethal when mixed with alcohol and/or other CNS depressants.
  • Ketamine, in high doses, can cause impaired motor function, high blood pressure, and potentially fatal respiratory problems.

Date rape drugs facts*

  • Date rape drugs are drugs used to assist in a sexual assault, which is any type of sexual activity a person does not agree to.
  • These drugs can affect you very quickly and cause victims to become weak, confused, and even pass out. You may not remember what happened while you were drugged. Date rape drugs can also cause seizures and even death.
  • The most common date rape drugs — also called club drugs — are flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), also called roofies; gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), also called liquid ecstasy; and ketamine, also called Special K. These drugs may come as pills, liquids, or powders.
  • Alcohol may also be considered a date rape drug because it affects judgment and behavior and can be used to help commit sexual assault.
  • The club drug ecstasy (MDMA) has also been used to commit sexual assault.
  • Protect yourself by not accepting drinks from others, not sharing drinks, watching your drink, and having a non-drinking friend with you to make sure nothing happens.
  • If you suspect you have been exposed to a date rape drug or have been sexually assaulted, call 911 and get to an emergency room immediately.
  • Contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE if you need assistance.

What are date rape drugs?

These are drugs that are sometimes used to assist a sexual assault. Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity that a person does not agree to. It can include touching that is not okay; putting something into the vagina; sexual intercourse; rape; and attempted rape. These drugs are powerful and dangerous. They can be slipped into your drink when you are not looking. The drugs often have no color, smell, or taste, so you can t tell if you are being drugged. The drugs can make you become weak and confused — or even pass out — so that you are unable to refuse sex or defend yourself. If you are drugged, you might not remember what happened while you were drugged. Date rape drugs are used on both females and males.

The three most common date rape drugs are:

  • Rohypnol (roh-HIP-nol). Rohypnol is the trade name for flunitrazepam (FLOO-neye-TRAZ-uh-pam). These drugs also are known as club drugs because they tend to be used at dance clubs, concerts, and raves.

The term date rape is widely used. But most experts prefer the term drug-facilitated sexual assault. These drugs also are used to help people commit other crimes, like robbery and physical assault. They are used on both men and women. The term date rape also can be misleading because the person who commits the crime might not be dating the victim. Rather, it could be an acquaintance or stranger.
