BBC – GCSE Bitesize: What is ethical behaviour? #gcse, #bitesize, #revision, #business #studies, #environment, #market, #competition, #eu, #government, #consumer

Businesses can choose to work in a way that profits only the owners or in ways that benefit the community. Working ethically means acting in ways that are both fair and honest.

What is ethical behaviour?

A big business has a lot of power, which it can either use responsibly or selfishly. Many firms operate to meet the needs of owners. Ethical firms also carefully consider the implications of what they are doing and the effect it might have on the community and the environment.

Ethics is about doing the right thing. Ethical behaviour requires firms to act in ways that stakeholders consider to be both fair and honest. Managers making ethical decisions take into account:

  • Impact. who does my decision affect or harm?
  • Fairness. will my decision be considered fair by those affected?

Children harvesting crops in a field in Bangladesh

Many owners believe that acting ethically increases costs and so reduces profits. For example, a business can cut costs by hiring child labour at very low wages in developing countries. Paying below average wages lowers the firm’s total costs.

Other businesses such as the Fairtrade Foundation have built an ethical brand image. believing that customers are prepared to pay more for products that consider the environment and pay a reasonable wage. Higher sales compensate for higher costs.

Profits from acting ethically are higher than firms that only consider their own narrow self-interest.

Business activities that meet the requirements of the law, but which are considered unfair by stakeholders can result in bad publicity. For example, a restaurant that pays minimum wage but keeps staff tips to boost profits is not breaking the law. It does, however, run the risk of losing the goodwill of customers.

Scottish Government Renewable Energy Grants for Solar Panels #solar #panels #government #rebate

Scottish Government Grants For Solar Panels

Solar panels in Scotland

Government figures released in March 2017 showed 51,426 households in Scotland have installed solar panels. This works out at 213 solar installations per 100,000 homes.

While this figure is below the average for the UK, Scotland is a good location for solar energy. The Scottish government has created several schemes in the last few years to try to increase solar panel uptake.

The developing sophistication in renewable energy technology alongside government initiatives has seen a rise in households adopting green energy systems.

What grants are there for solar in Scotland?

Up until 2010 the Scottish government backed The Energy Savings Scotland Home Renewables Grant. This scheme gave successful applicants a sum of money if they installed solar PV panels. They could receive up to 30% of the installation fee for solar panels worth up to £4,000.

While grants for solar panels in Scotland are now unavailable it is likely another scheme will be backed in the future, as the government looks to spread green, renewable energy across the UK.

The government currently provides a range of different schemes to support for those wanting to install solar panels and solar thermal heating in their homes.

There are interest-free loans, available through the Home Energy Scotland renewables loan scheme, financial incentives provided by the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), financial support through the ECO and Warmer Homes Scotland programmes. The UK-wide Feed-In Tariffs (FIT) scheme pays solar panel owners for the renewable energy they create.

The Feed-in Tariff in Scotland

For every unit of electricity generated by solar panels, the government pays the homeowner 4.32p/kWh, even if the electricity is used within the home. Any excess electricity produced that cannot be stored is returned to the national grid and the homeowner is still rewarded with a bonus payment per unit.

The average domestic household can earn up to £404 a year (£8,080 over 20 years) through this scheme. Energy bills will also be reduced significantly.

If a homeowner receives a grant from a non-government organisation such as an energy company it is unlikely they will receive the tariff payments.

Home Energy Scotland Renewables loan

The Scottish Government offers interest free loans for homeowners in Scotland who want to install a domestic renewables system or heating powered by a renewable energy source.

You can receive up to 75 percent of the total cost of renewables systems up to £10,000 and up to 100 percent of the total cost of connecting to a district heating scheme up to £5,000.

You must not start work until you have received a written offer of the loan. The amount that can be borrowed depends on the system type being installed. The scheme is also subject to availability of loan funds.

ECO scheme

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) provides support from energy suppliers to those in particular living situations and can be used with some Scottish Government loan schemes. It covers three areas.

Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO)

Energy companies provide insulation and heating improvements for those that qualify as low-income and vulnerable households.

Carbon Saving Communities Obligation (CSCO)

Energy companies provide insulation measures and connection to district heating to people in the bottom 25% of the UK’s most deprived areas and rural areas by income.

Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO)

Energy companies provide funding for wall and roof insulation measures and connection to district heating as primary measures.

Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage homeowners to use renewable heat technologies. The scheme is a world first and applies to households in England, Wales and Scotland.

The RHI is expected to make a key contribution to the aim to have 12% of heating powered by renewable sources by 2020. It provides financial support to homeowners who implement renewable heating systems for seven years.

To find out if you are eligible, the scheme’s rules and requirements can be found on Ofgem’s website .

*Earnings from solar panels depend on various factors (e.g. the location of the property, the position and slope of the roof, the power system of the solar panels), and therefore they vary. 8,080 would be the total earnings over 25 years, including 4,940 from the government tariff. A figure of 8,080 was obtained using the Energy Saving Trust’s Solar Energy Calculator, and is based on the following criteria; north London postal code, EPC Band D or better, 40̊ roof slope, none or very little shade, south-facing roof, and 4kw power system. After purchase and installation costs of 6,700, the profit would be 1,380. The new Feed-in Tariff is active as of January 15th 2016, and is updated quarterly.

Low-Interest and No-Interest Loans

While a grant is obviously an ideal source of government funding, you have an even greater chance of accessing government programs which provide financing for small businesses through loans. So if you’ve made the rounds of the banks and been shown the door, don’t give up yet.

In fact, government loans are often better than bank loans. They may be interest-free, or may offer highly competitive rates. (In some cases, your loan may even be considered “non-repayable”, which is another way the government says “grant”.) Government loans carry additional advantages. They’re more likely to be unsecured; that is, you don’t need to put up collateral against the loan.

You’ll find loans under a variety of programs, directed at different industries, different geographical regions, and even loans directed specifically at women and young entrepreneurs.

For example, the Canada Small Business Financing Program (CSBFP) may be able to help you obtain up to $500,000 by sharing with your financial institution some of the loan’s risk, a practice it employs for the purpose of encouraging financial institutions to increase the amount of loans it makes available to small businesses.

Find an office in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers a wide variety of premises to suit any business. InvestHK can help you find the space that is right for you.

Choosing a location

Central is considered Hong Kong s main business district. Leading names in the banking, accounting, legal and corporate worlds can all be found here. Of course, office space in such a sought-after location comes at a price, so many companies choose to locate in other popular areas, including Admiralty, Wanchai, Causeway Bay, Sheung Wan and Quarry Bay on Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) and Kowloon East on the Kowloon peninsula.

Hong Kong s excellent public transport system means that companies can choose to locate in more affordable locations and remain easily accessible for clients and staff.

Leasing an office

Leases are typically for two to three years with an option to renew. They should always come with a full tenancy agreement. Outgoings will include:

  • Cash security deposit (up to three months’ rent, including service charge and government rates)
  • One-off fee to the property agent (normally one month s rent)
  • Management service charges typically covering air conditioning, security, common areas, cleaning and other building services
  • Government rates at five percent of annual rateable value, payable quarterly in advance
  • Government rent is calculated at three percent of the rateable value of the property and is adjusted in step with any subsequent changes in the rateable value
  • Legal fees (if you employ a lawyer to process the tenancy agreement)

Serviced or virtual offices

Serviced or virtual offices are a popular choice for newly arrived companies.

Serviced offices are available across the city, allow for short-term leases and often provide tenants with a range of secretarial services.

Virtual offices provide a mailing address and a receptionist, who will answer the phone on behalf of your company.

Industrial buildings

Hong Kong offers three main types of industrial buildings for office set-up:

Flatted factories for general manufacturing, normally intended for sale or lease

Industrial/office premises floor space in developments with planning permission and lease modification for industrial/office use, certified for occupation

Specialised factories primarily purpose-built for specialised manufacturing process, usually for occupation by a single operator

Most of the flatted factories and industrial/office buildings are found in Kwun Tong and Tsuen Wan. Around 80 percent of specialised factories are in the New Territories.

Specialist centres (R D, laboratory, high-tech facilities)

If your company is involved in science, technology, design or research and development, and requires specialised facilities, there are a number of excellent options available:

InvestHK can help you find the right premises for your business and advise on leases and other matters. Contact us to find out more.

Egypt launches air raids on Libya after Christians killed

MINYA, Egypt (Reuters) – Egyptian fighter jets carried out strikes on Friday directed at camps in Libya which Cairo says have been training militants who killed dozens of Christians earlier in the day.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he had ordered strikes against what he called terrorist camps, declaring in a televised address that states that sponsored terrorism would be punished.

Egyptian military sources said six strikes took place near Derna in eastern Libya at around sundown, hours after masked gunmen attacked a group of Coptic Christians traveling to a monastery in southern Egypt, killing 29 and wounding 24.

The Egyptian military said the operation was ongoing and had been undertaken once it had been ascertained that the camps had produced the gunmen behind the attack on the Coptic Christians in Minya, southern Egypt, on Friday morning.

“The terrorist incident that took place today will not pass unnoticed,” Sisi said. “We are currently targeting the camps where the terrorists are trained.”

He said Egypt would not hesitate to carry out further strikes against camps that trained people to carry out operations against Egypt, whether those camps were inside or outside the country.

Egyptian military footage of pilots being briefed and war planes taking off was shown on state television.

East Libyan forces said they participated in the air strikes, which had targeted forces linked to al-Qaeda at a number of sites, and would be followed by a ground operation.

A resident in Derna heard four powerful explosions, and told Reuters that the strikes had targeted camps used by fighters belonging to the Majlis al-Shura militant group.

Majlis al-Shura spokesman Mohamed al-Mansouri said in a video posted online that the Egyptian air strikes did not hit any of the group’s camps, but instead hit civilian areas.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack on the Christians, which followed a series of church bombings claimed by Islamic State in a campaign of violence against the Copts.

Islamic State supporters reposted videos from earlier this year urging violence against the Copts in Egypt.

At a nearby village, thousands later attended a funeral service that turned into an angry protest against the authorities’ failure to protect Christians.

Teen Dating Violence Harms Both Genders, Government Report Shows

New data on teen dating violence reveals problems among both sexes

Findings from a new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study reveal that nearly 21% of female teens who date have experienced some form of violence at the hands of their partner in the last year and almost half of male students report the same.

The survey asked about 9,900 high school students whether they had experienced some type of violence from someone they dated. The results, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. showed that about 7% of teen girls reported experiencing physical violence, 8% said they experienced sexual violence and 6% experienced both. Almost 21% said they were the victim of some type of dating-related violence. For boys, about 4% reported experiencing physical violence, 3% experienced sexual violence and 10% experienced any type. Though girls were more likely to experience violence, the numbers show dating assaults affect young boys as well.

The new CDC survey adds to its prior research into the prevalence of dating violence, but the latest version asked updated questions that include sexual violence and more accurately portray violent behaviors, the study authors say.

Most of the teens surveyed reported experiencing such violence more than one time. The findings also showed that those who experienced some form of dating violence also had a higher prevalence of other health risks like drinking alcohol, using drugs or thinking about suicide.

Future research should look at the frequency of violence in teen dating relationships and how that may harm teens health, the researchers conclude.
