Considering that Apple s App Store generated over $10 billion in revenue for developers in 2014, it s no surprise that everyone s working on an app. However, small businesses looking to cash in big this way face major hurdles. Successfully developing an app is challenging enough, but businesses must also navigate the confusing app approval process.

And the final hurdle is getting the app to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

That s why, to overcome the challenges, you need to have the right strategy in place, from day one.

Phase one: app development

Best app makers for small businesses

Outsourcing app development can be tricky, especially if you re not on the same page as your developers. The market experts at The App Solutions recommend treating your app development like any freelance project — and, based on my own experience, I certainly agree. Put together a project brief, establish a project timeline and check in regularly to monitor progress. What s more:

  • Know what you want: Before getting started, consider which elements are most essential to your app s success. What goal are you trying to achieve with your app? Is the app part of a software as a service offering, or are you using it as an ecommerce platform. Do you need social media integration?
  • Talk to the developer before you hire. Whether yours is a Hangouts chat or a Skype call, take the time to talk with your developer before getting started, to ensure you re on the same page about expectations. Discuss important milestones up front and your contact plan for managing communication.

Phase two: app approval

Navigating the app approval process

For Android, follow the Android launch checklist. Take time to understand Google play policies and agreements, thinking about how to test for quality and how to determine your app s content rating. Ensure that your app complies with the maximum size requirements; on Google Play, this means 100 MB.

If your app exceeds this max, you can offer a secondary download with APK expansion files, which Google Play will host for free on its server infrastructure. You can use up to two expansion files (up to 2GB in size) for each APK.

Failure to confirm with Apple and Google guidelines will cause unnecessary delays with the approval process.

Phase three: app downloads

Standing out in a crowded marketplace

App store optimization (ASO) is the process of optimizing mobile apps to rank higher in an app s store. Sixty-three percent of apps are discovered through app store searches. And, just like with Google search results, the higher your app ranks in the app store, the greater the chance of a download. Increased visibility translates directly into more traffic for your app s page in the app store.

ASO requires a clear understanding of your target customer, including which keywords your target customer will be using to search for downloads. For most small businesses, your customer will be searching for terms related directly to your business products or services. If your business name is well known, brand affinity can also help boost your position in search results.

Boost your ASO and downloads with the following:

  • Title: Place your most important keywords in your title. Take time to research which keywords are most relevant for your target audience. Focus in on the two-to-three keywords (or keyword phrase) that matter the most. According to Kissmetrics. keyword title integration boosts app store ranking by 10.3 percent. That s a huge bump in a crowded marketplace.
  • Link directly from your website: Take advantage of your customers natural affinity for your brand, by including a download link on your website. Three great examples of this are the small business must-have apps Best International Money Transfer. BoxMeUp. and Evernote. Or, include a download link in an email footer.

The Bottom Line

There s no denying that in 2016, we re living in a mobile world. Globally, we spend more time on our smartphones than we do our desktops. Even if your B2B customers are still primarily desktop users, a mobile app can be a huge boon to your business. But the wrong app — like a bad product — can also hurt your business brand credibility.

So, be clear about development expectations from day one. Understand the rules for app submission and approval. And once your app is approved, don t assume customers will immediately download it; you ll need to optimize the app store listing for maximum visibility. With the right strategy in place from day one, you can overcome these hurdles and help your small business flourish in 2016 .

Common connection issues with ActiveSync / WMDC

Below are descriptions of and solutions for common issues encountered when connecting to Microsoft ActiveSync / Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC). These common issues relate to the following topics:

  • Installing Microsoft ActiveSync / WMDC
  • Firewall and virus scan programs
  • Other software
  • Port availability
  • Registry
  • Cables and hardware
  • Device Manager
  • Charging while in the docking station

More information on resolving ActiveSync / WMDC issues can be found on the following websites:

Installing Microsoft ActiveSync / WMDC

If you are connecting a rugged handheld computer running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher, you need Microsoft ActiveSync version 4.5 installed on the desktop PC before connecting.

The latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync / WMDC can be obtained from the following website:

If you are installing ActiveSync versions 3.8 or earlier, you may find that the install file pauses at 93% complete for several minutes. This is normal, and the process should finish soon (within 3 to 5 minutes). If it does not finish within 20 minutes, you may want to cancel the install process, delete the install file, re-download a new install file from the above website, and try again.

Firewall and Virus Scan Programs

For details on how to work around firewall and virus scan programs to create an ActiveSync connection, visit the following link:

Programs such as Palm HotSync can block ActiveSync from connecting. Try disabling or exiting HotSync or whatever other program may be trying to use or monitor the port.

If you are running TDS Solo Field CE or Sokkia iMap, these programs have been known to cause ActiveSync issues. For more information, please visit:

Check port availability in ActiveSync and on the Field PC

Make sure ActiveSync on the desktop PC is enabled to connect through the port with which you want to connect. From the main ActiveSync window on the desktop PC, click on the File menu Connections Settings. If you are connecting to a serial cable, an infrared port, or a Bluetooth device, make sure the Allow serial cable or infrared connection. checkbox is checked with the proper port selected. Or if you are using USB, make sure the Allow USB Connection with this desktop PC checkbox is checked, and then click OK. It may be good to reset the PC and the Field PC before trying to connect again to the port. Remember that all connection methods except for USB require you to double-tap on the Allegro`s PCLink icon to enable ActiveSync on the Allegro Field PC.

If you are using an Allegro Field PC, make sure the Allegro is set to the proper communication port by tapping on the Allegro`s Start menu Settings Control Panel, and then Communications and/or PC Connection.

Windows Registry Corruption

ActiveSync may fail to connect or start dropping the connection due to a corrupted Windows registry on the Windows CE or Windows Mobile device. If the problem is related to one particular Field PC, try to resolve the problem by restoring the device to a previously saved state or setting the device to factory default settings. Please refer to the product manual for more instructions.

Check Cables and Hardware

Some USB ports, particularly those on the front of some PCs, do not provide enough power to sustain a stable ActiveSync connection. Try switching your connection to another USB port, such as one on the back of the desktop PC. If that does not work, try some of the following options.

Check the physical port on the Field PC. For the USB port, check the brass pins or mini-USB connector on the base of the device. If you are using a docking station, check the pins and mini-USB connector in the dock as well.

If you are connecting to ActiveSync using a serial cable, make sure the serial cable is from Juniper Systems (part number 12446). Or if you are using an RS-232 sub D NULL modem cable from another manufacturer, make sure it is Windows CE or ActiveSync compatible (pins 6 (DSR) and 1 (DCD) are jumpered together and connected to pin 4 on the other end).

If you are using USB to connect to ActiveSync, make sure the Field PC shows up as the proper type of USB device in Device Manager on the desktop PC.

To make sure the Field PC is correct in Device Manager, follow the steps below:

  1. Connect the USB cable to the Field PC or drop the Field PC into the dock.
  2. Click on the desktop PC`s Start Menu Settings and/or Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel, double-click on the System icon Hardware tab Device Manager.
  4. Make sure Windows CE USB Device, RNDIS, or similar appears in the Device Manager list. Also make sure an ActiveSync device shows up under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category or that Windows Mobile device appears under Network Adapters or Connections.
  5. If Unknown Device appears under any of the categories listed in Step 4 and all other USB device besides the Field PC are recognized properly by the desktop PC, right-click and remove this Unknown Device from the Device Manager list, then reset the desktop computer and Field PC. ActiveSync may need to be uninstalled and then re-installed if the problem continues to occur after rebooting.

Charging while in the docking station

Try disconnecting the wall charger from the back of the dock station and plug it directly into the Field PC. Place the Field PC in the dock or connect the USB cable directly to the Field PC to see if the connection is more stable.

Mobile Testing Tutorials:

Tutorial 7. Real Device Vs. Emulator Testing

Tutorial 10. Overview of mobile Automation Calabash

Tutorial 11. Overview of mobile Automation IOS-Driver

This Mobile Testing Tutorial series is simple and easy to understand and to better understanding we recommend to go through sequentially.

Tutorial 1. Mobile Application Testing Strategies

In recent years, mobile market has come with increasing number of mobile devices, smart phones, tablets, and many other mobile applications. It has become a primary resource of communication for business owners, consumers, and clients.

The increasing number of mobile app business is totally into consumers hand; consumers decide which mobile application to rock or which to throughout.

Many applications come in the market; application failure and success totally depend on consumers like and dislike. However, the big question arises – What all things can make a mobile app appealing to influence consumer behaviors and make them connected with your brand and products?

Hidden secret of successful mobile app is its strong mobile app development strategy. Strong strategy becomes a key component of app development and decides whether the mobile app is going to meet customer expectations and business goals or not.

Mobile application testing is a gateway to test the quality of a mobile app before reaching their target audience and app stores.

1#. Selection of Device Model

Choosing a mobile device to test a mobile application is a most leading thought, before initializing the mobile app testing process. It’s a very difficult decision, because the mobile you choose for testing an app will be represented to millions and billions of customers.

Various things to be considers before selecting the mobile device for testing,

  • OS Version– Testing of a mobile app should be done on all major versions of mobile OS.
  • Screen Resolution– Although, users play with different screen resolutions while using the app, testing should be done on various screen resolution.
  • Compatibility Factor– A mobile applications may behave in a different manner on smartphone, tablet, and any other mobile devices, so the mobile application should be tested on all devices with which it is compatible.

While choosing the device model, if necessary, memory size, connectivity, etc can also be taken into account.

2#. Beta Testing process

Beta testing process is an excellent and very effective method of mobile app testing. This process meets you to real world testers, developers, real devices, real communicating network, and extensive geographic exposure.

By implementing beta testing on mobile app, testing facilitates these many things,

  • Network density
  • How well the particular app is behaving on a specific devices
  • Networking of real-world users with the app
  • How well other equipment related to the particular device behaves.
  • Compatibility of device with multiple networks (Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G, etc.)

3#. Cloud Mobile App Testing process

Cloud testing is another helpful selection to test mobile applications where it delivers a web-based mobile testing environment to deploy, test, and manage the mobile application. One of the biggest benefit, it reduces the project cost too.

Let’s see, what all benefits users get by using his testing process,

  • Although, Cloud testing provides a synchronized and pre-configured test environments; very capable in reducing defects associated with mistakenly designed test environments to improve the quality of application to a great amount.
  • By using this testing process, you no need to invest on any other advance testing tools, various types of configurations, licensing, and testing resources. It saves testing business from setting up on-premise test environment which is time consuming and cause the project delays. Moreover, cloud testing process reduces the cost, time, and increases the testing efficiency.
  • It is much more capable in solving problem of complex, dynamic, and dissimilar app in an in-house environment.
  • A cloud-based testing process delivers real-time testing results where defects are analyzed while running the test.

4#. Network Connectivity

All mobile applications deliver rich functionality on outstanding network connectivity. So, to get the real result, it is necessary to test the mobile application of supported network environment.

Various network imitation tools are accessible to test mobile apps which offer great assessment to the testing activities. These tools test mobile applications in different network speeds, bandwidths variations, etc. In addition to testing the app in a full internet connectivity environment, cloud computing keeps other factors in account during testing like; testing in limited connectivity, high speed, without connectivity, and metered connectivity.

So, to make mobile app successful on various network environment, it is necessary that mobile app should perform consistently on various network environment.

5#. Manual Vs Automated Testing

Automation testing is really helpful and effective while doing regression testing (repeating test procedure again and again) and testing while developing and updating an application.

Effective automation testing tool is costly when you purchase it first time, but how much it returns is more than its cost. Automation testing is really helpful in case of regression testing.

But, all applications and their functionality can’t be tested by automation tools. For those applications and their functionality, manual testing process is suitable to test the mobile application effectively. Let’s see in which scenarios we can use automation tools,

  • When an application grows and develops frequently.
  • When frequency level of regression testing is high
  • When an application carries maximum number of functionality and test cases.
  • To confirm application compatibility with new OS version
  • Ensure backward compatibility when the application is promoted

To make the mobile application successful, we can’t ignore the importance of mobile application testing strategy, but it is uncertain that good strategy can deliver quality mobile app and can increase the performance of the mobile application. With good testing strategy, good target devices and testing methodologies should be there. In next Mobile Testing Tutorial series we are going to see Introduction to Mobile Application Testing . If you like this article then please share with your friends and colleagues and stay tuned for next article in this Tutorial series on Mobile Testing.

9 Tools for Building Your Own Mobile App

As a small-business owner, if you decide there s good reason to develop your own mobile app. there are several ways to do it.

But before you dive into the deep end of the app development pool, familiarize yourself with a number of the more advanced mobile development options. Here s some background on each platform:

Android: You can create apps using Java for Android by downloading its free software development kit. The kit comes with samples, source code, developer tools and emulators for testing your app. Android even provides how-to videos, technical articles and instructions on how to develop apps, just in case you re feeling overwhelmed. A one-time $25 developer registration fee is needed to distribute apps in the Android marketplace, now known as Google Play .

Apple iOS: If you want to create an iPhone app using the iOS platform, you ll need to shell out about $99, which isn t much considering the elegance and functionality of the program. The iOS Developer Center has a wide selection of tools, tips, debugging tests and guides for creating apps for just about any purpose.

BlackBerry: The BlackBerry platform supports several ways to develop applications, mobile websites, themes and even widgets. To distribute apps on BlackBerry s App World. you have to pay a fee for every 10 apps you submit for approval. BlackBerry often offers promotions to waive this fee.

Windows: The Windows platform may not be the world s largest, but its user interface is easy to use. The Windows Phone development program provides valuable documentation on the best practices for marketing your app. Plus, you don t have to worry about your app or game idea getting rejected after you ve spent time creating it. Windows provides clear documentation on what will fly and what won t with its approval process.

Now that you have a better sense of the platform options, you ll want to start considering which tools will help you create your mobile app. But what if you re not a programming junkie? Call the activation number. When you receive your new credit card in the mail, it should have a sticker on the front that will explain how to activate it by either calling a phone number or going to a website. Locate the number and dial it using your phone. [1] [2] [3]

  • Ordinarily, the phone number will be a toll-free number, such as an 800 number.
  • Depending upon your card issuer, you may only be able to call at certain times, such as during regular business hours. [4]
  • Some card issuers only allow activation by phone. [5]
  • You may be asked to call and activate your card from a phone number that the card issuer has on file. If you do not or cannot, you may have to speak with a representative from the card issuer to activate the card. This is a security measure to prevent credit card fraud. [6]

Answer security questions. When you call to activate your card, you may be asked a series of security questions. [7] [8] Whether a live person or an automated assistant asks you these questions, you will need to answer them (possibly by punching numbers in using your phone’s keypad) in order to activate the card. These security questions will be based on personal information that may include things like:

  • Your account number
  • Your PIN number
  • Your social Security number
  • Your address
  • Your date of birth

Remove the sticker and sign the card. Once you have completed the call and your card is activated, you can remove the sticker from the front of the card. You should also sign the back of the card in the designated area. If you do not sign, merchants should ask to see identification when you attempt to use the card. Once the card is activated, it is ready to use.

  • Remember to destroy your old card, such as by shredding it or cutting it up. [9]

Visit the card activation website. In many cases, you can now choose to activate your card online. [10] Look for a sticker on the front of the card or an insert that lists a secure website to activate it. Using a computer and internet browser, visit this website.

  • The website may be hosted by your bank or credit card issuer, or it may be the website of a secure third-party service that it uses. [11] [12]
  • Avoid visiting credit card activation websites when using unsecure internet connections, such as public wi-fi in coffee shops. It is easier for thieves to access and steal sensitive information like credit card numbers over unsecure connections.

Enter the card information requested by the website. The activation website will ask you to enter information related to the card in order to activate it. You may be asked to enter this information in one step or a series of steps. Standard information you may be asked to enter includes:

  • The number of the new card. [13] This is the sixteen-digit number found on the front of the card.
  • Your social security number, or its last four digits. [14]
  • Your account number with the bank or credit institution, if applicable. [15]
  • The CVV number. [16] This is the three-digit number found on the back of cards issued by Visa and Mastercard.
  • The zip code of the address associated with the card account. [17]
  • Your date of birth [18]

Remove the sticker and sign the card. Once you have completed the activation process on the website, you can remove the sticker from the front of the card. You should also sign the back of the card in the designated area. If you do not sign, merchants should ask to see identification when you attempt to use the card. Once the card is activated, it is ready to use.

  • Remember to destroy your old card, such as by shredding it or cutting it up. [19]

Determine if you can activate your card though a personal account. If you have an online account or existing relationship with the institution your card comes from (such as with a bank, credit institution, or retail store), you may be able to activate the card through your account. [20] [21] [22] Check the information mailed to you along with your card to see if this option is available to you.

  • You may also be able to activate the card on your smartphone or other device via the institution’s mobile banking app, if it has one, and if your credit card is issued by your bank. Check the information mailed to you along with your card to see if this option is listed for you.

Visit your account login website. If your card issuer allows you to activate the card through your personal account, use a web browser to go to your account login website. Enter the information you are prompted to (username, account number, password, etc.) in order to access your account. [23] [24] [25]

  • If you are not sure of the account login website, it should be listed in the information mailed to you along with the credit card.
  • If you have an existing relationship with the credit card issuer, but do not yet have an online account, follow the directions provided on the website in order to create a username and password and set up your account.
  • Avoid visiting credit card activation websites when using unsecure internet connections, such as public wi-fi in coffee shops. It is easier for thieves to access and steal sensitive information like credit card numbers over unsecure connections.

Activate your card via your online account. Follow the directions provided to you in order to activate your card once you are logged into your online account. Your identity will be verified and you will be notified when your card is activated and ready to use. [26]

  • If you are unsure of where to click to activate your card, look for keywords like “activate my card” or “new card.” The directions should also be provided on the materials mailed to you along with your new card.
  • Enter any information requested, including the card number, expiration date, etc.
  • If you get stuck, look for online assistance, or call your credit card issuer for help.

Insurance for Auto Detailing and Mobile Auto Detailing Businesses

It goes without saying that if you’re planning to open an auto detailing business with a stationary location or start up your own mobile auto detailing business, you’re going to need insurance to protect your business and your personal assets. The good news is, this type of insurance isn’t really all that expensive. Especially when you consider the alternative if you’re not properly insured. If an unforeseen event occurs, it could put you out of business and you could very quickly lose your personal assets.

The most popular insurance for these types of businesses is called Garage Keeper’s Liability. Even if you own a mobile detailing business, this is the type of policy you want to have. You want to be covered while you are working on a vehicle and while the vehicle is in your possession. When getting a quote for a policy premium you also want to be sure you’re getting coverage for moving, picking up and delivering the vehicles you will be working on. Even if you’re opening a mobile detailing business, you still need coverage for moving the vehicle — even if it’s from the garage to the driveway. You never know what could happen!

You also want to have your equipment insured against theft. Pressure washers, carpet extractors, vapor steamers, buffers, polishers, compressors and generators don’t come cheap, so it’s absolutely imperative to insure them too. Again, the insurance coverage for this type of equipment isn’t expensive, so have it included with your policy premium. Usually you’ll get a quote for a minimum of $100,000 of liability coverage, but you might consider a quote on $300,000, $500,000 and even a million dollar umbrella policy. Believe it or not, the premium cost doesn’t vary that much. Most garage keeper’s liability packages cover the vehicle you are working on against damage and theft, as well as coverage for your equipment and coverage for pick-up and delivery of any vehicle.

If you are operating a mobile detailing business, your premium costs will be lower than operating out of a shop. A typical premium for $500,000 worth of coverage for a mobile detailing operator is about $1,800 per year — or about $150 per month. Most agencies require a 20 percent down payment to start the policy. If you plan to operate your business at a stationary location your premium costs will probably be up to 25 percent higher.

If you plan on having employees, you’ll most likely have to pay workers compensation insurance. This will protect you and your employee in the unlikely event that an injury occurs while working on the job. Your insurance agent can give you a quote for this, too. In many cases for small businesses, your state may actually provide you workman’s compensation insurance. Be sure you are “rated” properly from the beginning. You are not a repair shop or a mobile repair business, so make that clear or your workers compensation rates will be very high and it will take a long time to get your rating changed.

Most auto detailing businesses with employees are rated “auto laundry” for workers compensation insurance. Auto laundry is one rating above car washing but several levels below auto repair. Have your agent give you a quote on this insurance, too. If you are the only individual and have no employees you may not need workers compensation insurance. Check with your state or insurance agency for details. This article is only intended to give you an overview of what you should consider and look for. You’re the one who will have to do you’re the homework and make sure you are properly insured.

When you shop for insurance, get two or three quotes and compare costs and coverages. It is not a bad idea to contact an insurance brokerage house that deals with many different carriers. You want a carrier with an A, A+ or A- rating. Typically the insurance carriers that write these types of premiums are also writing premiums for body repair shops, car washes, limousine companies and other automotive types of businesses. Start with your personal insurance company and see if they can give you a competitive quote. If they can’t, they should be able to refer you to an agency that can. You should “shop” your policy every two or three years. Just put it out there and get a quote! This keeps your insurance agent honest and helps protect you from paying too much.

As your business grows your insurance coverage needs will change. You may need additional coverage when working at airports, parking structures, parking lots of office buildings, condo properties and at car dealerships. As a mobile detailing operator you should always have a copy of your policy in your mobile rig just in case a property manager wants to confirm that you have the correct amount of coverage to be working on that particular commercial property.

And as you hire employees, be sure to have your insurance carrier check their driving record before you put them behind the wheel of a customer’s vehicle. If they have a poor driving history you may not be able to extend an employment offer to them or not allow them to move any of your customer’s vehicles..
