PharmD at SIUE

The SIUE School of Pharmacy prepares pharmacists who can serve the health care needs of the citizens of Illinois and the surrounding region. The School provides a contemporary and innovative pharmacy education utilizing state-of-the-art technology, new classrooms and laboratories. The hallmark of the program at SIUE is the focus on patient-centered education.

The combination of scientific and technical emphasis of our program ensures that our graduates are prepared for highly-competitive pharmacy careers. The curriculum provides for interprofessional education, integrated and team-based learning, experiential education throughout the four years, and preparation for contemporary roles including health promotion, disease prevention and wellness.

The SIUE School of Pharmacy program is a 2+4 program. This means that students must first complete the Pre-Pharmacy Curriculum and then, if admitted, complete the 4-year PharmD program.

The Pre-Pharmacy Curriculum can be completed in 2 years. However, it is not required that students complete only two years of college. Some students will need developmental coursework before beginning the college science courses, while other students will choose to earn a bachelor’s degree before beginning the PharmD program.

Every prospective student should determine the best course of action depending upon academic strengths and interests. SIUE provides services for students to help them plan strategies for success before admission and after acceptance to the program. Academic averages for SIUE pharmacy students can assist in establishing goals prior to admission.

It is important to know that completion of the Pre-Pharmacy Curriculum does NOT guarantee acceptance to the PharmD program. Students must apply for admission to the PharmD program one year before they wish to begin the PharmD curriculum.

Once admitted, PharmD students complete three years of didactic study on campus and a fourth year of advanced pharmacy practice experiences at various pharmacy practice sites. A complete list of the required courses can be found at:

Today, the DFW center has facilities located at both the North Texas Veterans Administration Medical Center and within the central Dallas Medical District. More than 80 third- and fourth-year pharmacy students and up to 20 postgraduate practice and specialty pharmacy residents receive their education and training in the Metroplex and are preparing to become future professional pharmacy leaders.
