The College requires English as a foreign language student to take the TOEFL IBT test. No ability-to-benefit students will be admitted into the intuition. Student must pay all related fees, as stated in the current fee schedule when submitting a signed enrollment contract or make other arrangements suitable to the institution. This institution has not entered into an articulation or transfer agreement with any other college or university. Filling out a registration or admission form doesn’t confirm your enrollment. Every student will need to talk to an academic advisor.

What is the economic outlook in Houston?

Mitchell: The job market continues to grow rapidly. In fact, the economy is growing faster in the Houston region than any other area in Texas. With that said, we’d like it to grow even more quickly. Although there has been a recent downturn in the energy industry, other industries such as specialty chemical, health care, maritime and aerospace continue to make strides.

The region ranks #2 nationally for the city with the most Fortune 500 companies, 47 percent of all specialty chemical stock is produced in Houston and the region produces 60 percent of the country’s gasoline. The maritime industry is especially strong and the Port of Houston was named the #1 export port for the United States, outpacing New York.

Higginbotham: Houston is a gateway for trade to Mexico, Canada and expanding markets of Latin America. Economic strategists identify Houston as one of the most robust and dynamic economies in the world. The common theme by Greater Houston Partnership is, “Houston is ready-made for business success,” and has become the driving force for continuing growth.

What are some of the top employers in Houston?

Mitchell: Major employers can be found across all industries, ranging from energy to health care. However, some of the biggest include Johnson Space Center, Texas Medical Center, Exxon, Shell, Mobile, Haliburton, Bay Port Industrial Complex, and specialty chemical companies such as Dow Chemical and Lubrizol.

Higginbotham: Some of the major employers in the region include Shell Oil, Hewlett-Packard, JP Morgan Chase, Centerpoint Energy, Kroger Company, H.E.B. Foods, Memorial Hermann Health System, Aramark Corp, and Pappas Restaurants.

How is Houston attracting new industries?

Higginbotham: Houston’s geographic area provides convenience to industry and attracts investors who want to expand operations to the Gulf Coast Region.

  • Location: Optimal communications throughout the United States based on Central Time Zone; one hour behind East Coast and two hours ahead of West Coast. Basically midway point between both East and West Coasts; can reach destination by air in a couple of hours.
  • Seaport: Port of Houston offers worldwide access as well as three other seaports within the region.
  • Airport: Two major airports for passenger air cargo operations. Ellington Airport, Houston Airport System, has letter of intent with a major corporation for potential spaceport.
  • Weather: Climate allows for year-round outdoor activities.

The Master of Arts in Education: Reading Specialist program is designed to assist practicing teachers in becoming specialists in the area of reading. Through this program, teachers learn how to design assessment, differentiate instruction for text complexity, and design instructional approaches to improve Kindergarten – 12 th grade literacy.

Licensed teachers interested in becoming specialists in the area of reading. (Not recommended for substitute teachers.)

The Master of Arts in Education: Reading Specialist program is designed to assist practicing teachers in becoming specialists in the area of reading. Through this program, teachers learn how to design assessment, differentiate instruction for text complexity, and design instructional approaches to improve Kindergarten – 12 th grade literacy.

Practicing teachers within this program will learn through an interactive format such as online forums, discussion groups, collaborative assignments, and pragmatic case studies. As a candidate in this program, you will study strategies for improving reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, phonics and phonemic awareness. Candidates will learn how to assess reading difficulties, analyze and interpret test data, and provide direction for response to intervention initiatives. Focus on diverse learning needs and linguistic differences in a day of CCSS will be included, as well as current technology that facilitates effective reading and writing instruction for learners of different ages, ability levels, and ethnic backgrounds.

The coursework within the Reading Specialist program meets the International Reading/Literacy Association Standards for Reading Professionals, NCATE/CAEP standards for specialization in reading, and the Illinois Standards for Reading Specialists. Three 15-clock hour clinical practicum experiences and a 32-clock hour creative research project/practicum are required.

Begin to research and understand your state’s licensure requirements right away. In the state of Illinois, candidates are required to achieve passing results on the TAP or an ACT overall total composite of 22 (including the writing sample score of a 21) and Content Area Reading Specialist Test in order to become licensed as a Reading Specialist.

Course Description

This course focuses on advanced physiology and pathophysiology principles. This course is used to guide the advanced nursing practice student in understanding normal function and interpreting changes in normal function that result in symptoms and diagnostic markers indicative of illness. Emphasis is placed on the following systems: cellular environment and inflammatory changes; fluids, electrolytes and acid-base balance; genetics, genetic diseases, and the role of the environment; stress, disease, and the development of neoplasms; hematology and alterations in immunity. In addition, the physiology and pathophysiology of the endocrine, pulmonary, renal, digestive and integumentary, cardiovascular and lymphatic, musculoskeletal, reproductive, and neurological systems, including mood disorders, are addressed. NUR-635: Advanced Pharmacology Total Credits: 4 credits

Course Description

This course focuses on the basic concepts and principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and their practical implication in clinical practice. This course also places an emphasis on the strong influence of physiological variables (age, ethnicity, or pregnancy) and pathological conditions (hepatic or renal insufficiency, cardiac dysfunction) on drugs pharmacological response. An in-depth understanding of the relationship between patient s physiological/pathological variables and pharmacodynamics/pharmacokinetics can provide additional insight for practitioners in predicting potential drug interactions, and thus will provide additional guidance in prescribing strategies. This course also includes clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; clinical toxicology; and pathology and pharmacotherapy of cardiovascular, psychiatric, endocrine, respiratory, gastrointestinal, bone and joint, infectious, reproductive, and dermatological disorders. NUR-634: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning With Skills Lab Total Credits: 4 credits

Course Description

This course builds upon the student s undergraduate and clinical assessment skills, offering advanced health assessment content to provide the foundation for the advanced practice nursing role. This course addresses the completion and interpretation of a head-to-toe assessment in addition to focused assessments for chief complaints that include physical, psychosocial, spiritual, risk, and functional assessments in diverse populations and across age groups. Students learn a systematic method of diagnostic reasoning and clinical decision making to establish differential diagnoses. Prerequisites: NUR-631, and either NUR-632 or NUR-633.

FNP-630: Health Promotion and On-Campus Experience I Total Credits: 4 credits

Course Description

This course covers preventive health care practices and integrates cultural and spiritual considerations, environmental factors, genetic influences, and national public health objectives. Emphasis is placed on development of the advanced practice registered nurse-patient relationship to enhance the effectiveness of patient education, counseling, and promotion of healthy lifestyle changes. Students explore concepts relevant to primary care, including family systems theory and developmental theory. Students are also introduced to well visits across the life span and build upon advanced health assessment skills in assessing the well child, adolescent, woman, and man. Specific emphasis is placed on clinical diagnostic reasoning and interpretation and the development of differential diagnoses based on clinical practice guidelines. Students examine professional and patient community resources and evaluate the use of integrative healing strategies in assisting patients to achieve health goals using evidence-based research. This course includes a required 3-day, on-campus experience. Prerequisite: NUR-634.

Students are also introduced to well visits across the life span and build upon advanced health assessment skills in assessing the well child, adolescent, woman, and man. Specific emphasis is placed on clinical diagnostic reasoning and interpretation and the development of differential diagnoses based on clinical practice guidelines. Students examine professional and patient community resources and evaluate the use of integrative healing strategies in assisting patients to achieve health goals using evidence-based research. Evidence-based research is utilized to develop comprehensive, cost-effective, least invasive, quality health care. Care includes health promotion counseling, screening, and patient education to optimize patient and family health. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to guide clinical decision making. Management of patient illness includes ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmacological and nonpharmacological integrative healing therapies, collaborating with other health professionals and community agencies, and pursuing appropriate follow-up. Paralegals provide critical and integral support to lawyers, corporations, public institutions and other employers, and they have established themselves to be an indispensable workforce within the legal system since the 1960s. Paralegals must perform all tasks under the supervision of a lawyer. Paralegals may not provide legal services directly to the public except as permitted by law.

Different categories of paralegals offer specialized skills. A probate paralegal may interview clients while conducting the collection, valuing and transfer of assets. A corporate paralegal working within a large corporation may help write employee benefit plans, employment handbooks, agreements, or perform patent and trademark searches, and assist in intellectual property issues. A family paralegal may have a significant role maintaining client contact and helping clients sort through legal issues. A litigation paralegal plays an important role in case management up to and including trial. Whatever the role, the paralegal provides an integral part of the legal team. PCC’s Paralegal program offers a high quality education, providing you with the fundamental skills you need to succeed in today’s world of paralegal professionals.

Degrees and Certificates

PCC offers the following two program options in Paralegal Studies. Please follow the enrollment steps for admission.

Associate of Applied Science Degree

90 credit degree program, including 24 hours of required paralegal courses; 21 credit hours of elective paralegal courses; 27 credits of general education courses; and 18 credits of other electives. The Associate Degree Paralegal program is an open-enrollment program. The primary prerequisite is a college level writing class (Wr 121), which is met by students who have a previous 4 year (and most 2 year) degrees. Advising and career development counseling is offered by the full-time faculty and career services department, providing students an opportunity to develop their careers in directions suited to their needs and interests.

Certificate

45 credit certificate program, including 24 credit hours of required paralegal courses and 21 credit hours of elective paralegal courses. The Certificate program is a limited-entry program requiring Department Chair approval to enter. Please see the Certificate Guidelines for more information.

While in the program, students must maintain a C average in all required courses.

New Program Developments

The Paralegal Program remains active and current by conducting surveys of potential employers, graduates of the program, current students and faculty to obtain feedback. Through consultation with the Program’s Advisory Council, program developments are implemented which enhance the student’s educational and career development experience, such as:

  • Supplemental programs

The program works to maintain links with local law firms and corporations to ensure information about job openings, training needs and professional developments.

Drug Rehab – What is it?

No matter what the substance abused, treatment is usually the key to recovery for individuals and families suffering from drug abuse and alcoholism. For drug rehab programs to be effective addicts must enter the rehabilitation process with honesty, open-mindedness, and most importantly, willingness ; treatment only beomes effective when an addict becomes willing to surrender to the reality of his or her current condition.

The key to effective rehabilitation is a program’s ability to help an addict gain an understanding of what’s driving the addiction in the first place – namely the unmanageable behaviors and thought processes inherrent to addiction. Drug rehab centers offer levels of care ranging from detoxification and basic outpatient programs through intensive long-term residential treatment. The ultimate goal of all of these is to enable the individual in recovery to live a life free from the negative conseqences of drug and alcohol abuse.

Drug addiction is a disease, and like any other disease, it requires treatment to arrest it’s progress and reverse it’s negative effects. Drug rehabilitation is therefore an essential first step in the recovery process. Most treatment methodologies teach addicts that the process which takes place in a rehab center must continue long after the completion of formal treatment for the best chance of success, and that long-term recovery requires vigilance and continuing practice for the remainder of the recovering addict’s life. Addicts who find success in recovery are those who commit themselves honestly and wholeheartedly to the struggle for sobriety and freedom from the chains of addiction.

Drug Rehab Programs

The most successful drug rehab programs take a multidisciplinary approach to the comprehensive health of the addict, focusing on helping addicts to develop and practice the mental and emotional skills necessary for long-term recovery. There are thousands of drug rehab programs and alcoholism treatment centers located throughout the United States and the world, employing widely differing methodologies for treatment. Examples of different types of drug rehab programs include outpatient, day treatment, full-hospitalization inpatient, residential short-term, and residential long-term treatment. Short-term residential drug rehabilitation programs offer intensive but relatively brief (usually 28-30 days) treatment, commonly based on a 12-step approach. Short-term drug rehab programs intensively focus on the most basic aspects of recovery, including detoxification, life skills building, abstinence and relapse prevention. Long-term residential drug rehab programs focus on the same issues, but are more comprehensive over a longer period of time, and also tend to focus more heavily on relapse prevention and goal setting in recovery for success post-treatment. Long-term drug rehab programs often last six months or longer, and most offer an aftercare program for continuing support following the individual’s stay at the drug rehab center itself.

The Drug Rehab Process – Detoxification

The drug and alcohol rehab process should always start with detoxification and medical stabilization as its first step. Detox is the process of withdrawing alcohol and drugs from the brain and body. Detox from alcohol and most drugs requires medical supervision, and often includes one on one and group counseling in which the addict in withdrawal can discuss and receive support for the feelings they encounter during the detoxification process. Before they can begin the actual treatment phase, an addict must rid their body of the poisons and chemical byproducts produced by drugs and alcohol (in fact, alcohol and many drugs are technically poisons in their own right). The detox portion of the rehabilitation process can take days, weeks, or in rare cases even months, depending on the drug of abuse and length of the abuse, and the addict’s tolerance to the drug.

Drug Rehab Philosophy and Methods

Drug rehab programs differ in their treatment philosophies, methodologies, rehabilitation services offered, and populations treated. For a drug rehab program to be successful, it must incorporate intensive addiction counseling and education services, with a focus on nurturing personal growth and life skills. The most successful centers offer aftercare or continuing care programs in which some degree of counseling services or group recovery continues post-treatment. Aftercare is an essential part of the rehab process as it helps the addict to apply what they’ve learned in rehab to real life. When choosing a drug rehab program, it is important to do comprehensive research to understand the similarities and differences between individual centers, and the rehabilitation philosophies and methods they employ.

Inpatient and Residential Drug Rehab Programs

Inpatient or residential drug rehab is the most successful form of treatment for long-term drug abuse. Inpatient treatment is where a person actually checks in and lives at a drug rehab facility exclusively for a period of time and learns to apply recovery tools, studies relapse prevention and identifies relapse triggers, and participates in an intensive counseling and therapy intended to arrest the progress of drug addiction. At inpatient drug rehab centers, professional treatment and counseling is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Inpatient treatment centers are especially effective because they provide environments in which addicts with a common goal of recovery can support one another in the rehabilitation process daily.

Low-intensity outpatient programs may offer little more than drug education and admonition.
