The Best Carpet-Cleaning Pros

How We Tested

To find out which services are best, undercover consumer testers made appointments with four leading firms to have two rooms of carpet cleaned, with added stain-protection treatment (which GHRI recommends, since cleaning can strip the manufacturer’s original finish). Testers evaluated:

  • Customer service when making the appointment
  • In-home experience with the technicians
  • How clean the pros got the carpets

And the Winners Are.

With tying overall scores, Stanley Steemer and Sears Carpet Upholstery Care cleaning services came out tops in our tests. Stanley Steemer did the most thorough job overall, clinching the highest combined score for completing the most tasks and leaving our testers most satisfied with the results. Sears came in a close second and had particularly good customer service, earning top marks in appointment setup and interactions with the in-home technicians. The two were also the most cost-effective, at 22 cents per square foot and 27 cents per square foot, respectively, for cleaning and stain-protection treatment roughly 45 percent cheaper, on average, than the other two firms, ServiceMaster and Home Depot’s Chem-Dry.

What Clean Really Means

Whether you go with a national or a local company, there are a few basics to expect. Services may require a two-room reservation or a minimum dollar amount, and costs can vary based on floor size and extras like stain-protection application or odor treatments. During the in-home session, the technicians should offer to move furniture (small stuff for sure; larger or delicate pieces, like a china cabinet, won’t be moved) or at least put protectors under furniture legs. They should also pretreat stains, tell you how long before you can walk on the carpet (often immediately or within an hour or two), and explain what to do if stains reappear (which can happen if the pad or backing is also stained and the unremoved matter wicks up as the carpet dries). If your carpets are very dirty, are matted down, or haven’t been cleaned in ages, don’t expect miracles. The technicians should say what results are realistic before they start. To keep carpets looking their best, GHRI recommends deep cleaning every 12 months, or more often in homes with kids or pets.

Pros and Cons of Online School

The popularity of online schools has grown over the past several years. As computer technology advances, so does the structure of online courses. Improvements in technology have made online schooling a more accessible option for traditional colleges and universities.

Online schools are a relatively new phenomenon and is constantly evolving. Teachers and students alike are becoming more familiar how to navigate online courses, and programs continue to improve.

Online schools, as with anything, have their advantages and disadvantages. Although students receive just as valuable of an education in online school as in a campus-based school, whether or not their particular learning style is compatible with the structure of online courses determines if the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros of Online Schools

  1. Time flexibility. Online courses are convenient because students may log into the course material whenever it suits their schedule. Of course there are deadlines regarding homework assignments and discussions, but as long as the student meets these deadlines, they can read and review course material at their leisure. This is particularly great for those also juggling a career and family.
  2. Availability. There is a growing number of online schools being established each year. This means that people considering pursuing an online degree can shop around for schools, finding the one that best suits their educational needs and desires. Online degree programs are available that offer certificates. online associates. bachelors. or masters degree .
  3. 24/7 access to course material. In the traditional college setting, students must rely on their notes in order to remember class lectures. With online school, written lectures are available throughout the course of the semester, so going back to review course material is always an option.
  4. Location flexibility. With online schools across the world, students can now take classes from a different state or country without leaving the comfort of their own home. This also increases diversity among students, as classes may be composed of people with different backgrounds from around the world.
  5. Zero commute. This is one of the most appealing advantages to online school, as the extra time it takes to commute to classes, could be time spent completing homework, studying, working, or raising a family.
  6. Self-Direction. Students choose when and where they complete schoolwork and are able to determine their own pace.
  7. Multi-media presentations. Many online courses use a variety of media, such as CD/DVD’s and a Web Cam, to teach lessons and to aid students in completing their homework.
  8. Variety of course options. There is virtually no limit to the variety of classes offered through online schools. Students are able to take courses ranging from an associates degree in criminal justice to a bachelors in business administration to a masters degree in nursing .

Cons of Online Schools

  1. Limited interaction with instructor. Online professors usually have a limited role in teaching, as they primarily guide students through the pre-written or pre-recorded course material, rather than teach it. The majority of the interaction with professors comes from class discussions and feedback on assignments. Some students who thrive in one-on-one interaction with their professors, may have trouble with this format of schooling.
  2. Technology requirements. Not everyone has access to a computer in their homes, or their computer might not be equipped with the latest technologies, which inhibits their online learning experience. Many online schools are still working to build their technical support, so students may be on their own when attempting to troubleshoot problems.
  3. Social interaction. One of the benefits of attending courses in a traditional bricks-and-mortar school is the peer-to-peer interaction. Although most online courses do have a discussion area where students are required to talk about specific questions pertaining to that week’s lesson, this is done primarily through writing, making it more difficult to form lasting bonds.
  4. Campus environment. Online schools lack valuable campus resources such as extracurricular clubs and activities that can be both enriching and educational. This is particularly important for undergraduate students coming directly from high school, as they may find that they miss these opportunities for personal enhancement.
  5. Time management. Individuals who are prone to procrastination will have an especially difficult time adapting to the structure of online school. Hours of self-directed work are necessary to get through all of the material, including course lectures, video supplements, assignments, assigned textbook reading and discussions. Sometimes obtaining your online degree, especially an online masters degree. require a greater amount of work.
  6. Stigma. Although online schools have gained more credibility over the past few years. There is a common misconception that online school is easier than traditional schools, and employers may not take your degree seriously. However, 60 percent of employers report that they value an online degree.
  7. Credit transfer. Until the stigma of online school is eradicated completely, it will remain slightly more difficult to transfer online course credits to a traditional school.
  8. Financial aid. Not all online schools will accept financial aid, so students who will require financial aid to assist in paying tuition should do their research before sending out any application.

Tips Tactics:

  • Beware of online degree scams, or “degree mills”, that prey on those looking to earn an online degree quickly. These degree mills are usually easy to detect, as they offer a fast degree delivery that you must pay for in advance. Another tell-tale sign is being able to choose which degree is listed on your diploma, for a fee. Always check a program’s credibility by verifying their accreditation.
  • For the best chances of success, make sure that your computer is up-to-date. This will ensure that you have all the necessary tools to complete your online coursework.
  • Minimizing distractions around your workspace is essential to providing a productive atmosphere for online learning. Also steer clear of the temptation to surf the Web while completing coursework.

The pros and cons of annuities – CBS News #pros #and #cons #of #savings #accounts

The pros and cons of annuities

After covering the basics of annuities. it’s time to address specifically the pros and cons of these tax-deferred retirement savings vehicles.

Guaranteed income for life is a big time benefit, but it comes at a cost. The first concern is that you are giving up access to your money in exchange for the income stream. For this reason, if you are going to invest in an immediate annuity, it would be prudent to do so with only a portion of your total portfolio. As you age, access to money becomes more important, so this is a significant concern. Many retirees like to use an annuity to cover their fixed costs, and describe it as similar to having a salary to meet regular expenses.

Additionally, most immediate annuities provide for fixed payments, which are not adjusted for inflation. Although we are in a low inflation environment today, who knows whether prices will rise substantially during the payout period of your annuity? Finally, an investment in an immediate annuity is an investment in the company that issues it. The guaranteed stream of income is only as good as the financial stability of the insurance company that writes the contract. As we all learned during the recent crisis, insurance companies can run into big problems.

Although there are different flavors of deferred annuities (fixed, variable, equity index), they all share two distinct phases: the accumulation phase, during which your money grows on a tax-deferred basis; and the payout phase, during which you begin to receive scheduled payments. Deferred annuities share the same lack of liquidity as immediate annuities, but there are other, more worrisome downsides to these contracts.

Insurance agents often extol the tax advantages of deferred annuities, but there are three big issues surrounding their taxation.

1. When you start withdrawing money from the annuity, earnings (but not principal) will be taxed at your ordinary income rate, rather than at the lower capital gains rates applied to investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other non-tax-deferred vehicles in which funds are held for more than one year. Investing in a deferred annuity means that you may be converting capital gains into ordinary income, which can add up to big tax payments, especially for those in high tax brackets.

2. Many financial advisers or insurance agents recommend variable or equity-index annuities for accounts that are already tax-deferred, like 401(k)s, 403(b)s and IRAs. This makes absolutely no sense, because these accounts are already tax-advantaged. If someone tries to sell you a variable annuity to hold in a tax-deferred account or encourages you to purchase an annuity before you maximize your retirement plan contribution, head for the exit.

3. From an estate planning perspective, proceeds from most deferred annuities do not receive a “step up” in cost basis when the owner dies. Other types of investments, such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds, do provide a step up in tax basis upon the owner’s death, which can limit the tax liability for your heirs.

By far the most problematic issue with deferred, variable and equity-index annuities are the sky-high costs. Mortality and expense charges (M E), administrative fees, underlying fund expenses, charges for special features and the salesperson’s commission can eat up 2-3 percent of the value of your investment every year!

Insurance professionals will talk about the value of the death benefit of these contracts, but since most people are using the funds in retirement, the death benefit is irrelevant. If you do need life insurance, there are lots of cheaper options, like term insurance.

By now you realize that I’m not a huge fan of deferred variable annuities, but if you already own one, consider exchanging it for a lower cost one through TIAA-CREF or Vanguard. Section 1035 of the tax code allows you to swap one annuity for similar one without triggering tax liability.

When considering annuities to secure income in retirement, make sure you weigh the potential benefits as well as the inherent risks in these complicated savings vehicles.

Homeschooling Pros and Cons

Parents who are seriously considering homeschooling their kids should weigh the pros and cons before making a decision that will affect their child.

More and more parents are taking up homeschooling nowadays, and this method of educating one’s child is widely accepted in the United States, and elsewhere in the world. Homeschooled kids excel in standardized testing. Universities and colleges have no qualms about accepting children who have been homeschooled. And because they have been trained early on to be independent learners, homeschooled individuals grow up to become reliable, resourceful individuals.

But before you decide to bid sayonara to the traditional education offered by public and private schools, here is a list of homeschooling pros and cons that you need to consider.

Pros of Homeschooling

  • Educational liberty – Most states allow homeschooled students to choose to learn what, when and how they want to learn, and of course, for as long as they need to in order to fully grasp the subject, while still following homeschool curriculum provided by the state. Homeschooling parents can use a variety of methods to teach their kids and focus on areas that their kids find interesting and excel in the most. Parents can tailor their lessons to fit their child’s abilities, maturity and interest.
  • Religious freedom – Many parents feel that homeschooling provides them with the opportunity to incorporate their values and beliefs into their child’s learning on a daily basis.
  • Closer family ties – Almost all homeschooling families say that homeschooling has played an essential role in bringing their family closer. The time that parents spend teaching their children, and the time the kids spend learning together, can foster a loving relationship in the family.
  • Emotional stability – Homeschooled kids don’t have to worry about bullying, peer pressure and spiteful competition so their self-esteem won’t have to suffer needlessly. Parents with kids who have been the target of bullying have resorted to homeschooling to protect their kids from the harmful effects of harassment.
  • Loose schedules – The thing that most, if not all, homeschooling parents and children enjoy about it is the fact that they no longer have to work their lives around homework and school hours. They usually accomplish in a few hours each day what typically takes a week or more to complete in a classroom setting. Because they spend more time in hands-on learning, homeschooled kids can do away with homework, which is what usually keeps public schooled kids up late at night. Families can schedule off-season vacations, go on field trips or visit museums, zoos and parks during the week as part of their learning experience.

Cons of Homeschooling

  • Time consuming – Homeschooling parents spend a chunk of their time planning, driving their kids to and from activities and participating in them. Ideally, in a two-parent home, one of the parents work while the other devotes time to homeschooling. It becomes even more challenging for single parents who choose to homeschool their kids because they need to balance time between work and educating their kids.
  • Financial constraints – In order to homeschool their kids, one of the parents usually forgo full-time employment and this can hurt the family’s finances. However, most families say that the sacrifice is worth it to see their kids grow and learn first-hand.
  • Limited access to sports – Many homeschooling families mention the lack of available community sports activities wherein their kids can be accepted. However, some homeschooling families have found a way to resolve this issue by creating their own teams and initiating sports activities together.
  • Criticism from others – While homeschooling continues to grow in popularity, many people still have a negative view of it and it is not uncommon, even for friends and family, to criticize those who choose to homeschool their kids.

Pros and Cons of Ethanol #pros #of #alcohol

The Upside of Ethanol

Proponents of ethanol emphasize its environmental and energy security benefits.

  • Ethanol is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural feedstocks, and thus can be produced domestically.

Using ethanol (particularly E85) also results in less pollution, reducing smog-forming emissions by as much as 50 percent relative to gasoline. E85-powered vehicles also contribute to global warming, although experts disagree about just how much greenhouse gas is emitted by using ethanol.

One might expect that by using E85, net carbon dioxide emissions would be almost zero. The crops used to make the ethanol absorb CO2 from the atmosphere during their growth, then this CO2 is put back into the atmosphere when the ethanol is burned in an automobile engine. In reality, this cycle is overly simplistic because it fails to recognize other greenhouse gas emissions that occur during the cultivation and production of ethanol. Modern farming, for example, relies heavily on diesel-powered equipment that emits greenhouse gases. Distilling ethanol is also an energy-intensive process that often uses electricity generated from coal, another source of greenhouse emissions.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley recently examined six major studies of ethanol production and concluded that using ethanol made from corn instead of gasoline would lead to a moderate 13 percent reduction in greenhouse emissions. However, the researchers note that more dramatic reductions are possible if technology advances make it economical to make ethanol from cellulosic materials such as switchgrass, a crop currently grown by some U.S. farmers to control erosion on idle fields. Using cellulosic ethanol, they project, could result in 88 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

The UC Berkeley study also contradicts a common criticism of ethanol: that it takes more energy to produce it than it delivers as a motor fuel. The study concludes that ethanol made from corn does indeed have a positive net energy balance, particularly if you consider that other valuable products, such as corn oil, are byproducts of the ethanol-making process.

The Downside

E85 may be better for the environment and the American farmer, but it has some drawbacks.

  • The first is price: ethanol can be more expensive than gasoline. depending on where you live.
Data on fuel prices from the DOE shows that in the Midwest (where much of the country s ethanol is produced) E85 sells for nearly 30 cents less per gallon than conventional gasoline. However, on the West Coast, filling up with ethanol would cost a driver 35 cents more per gallon. In the mid-Atlantic states, E85 had an even higher premium: 44 cents per gallon.
  • The higher price of E85 in many areas is made worse by ethanol s second drawback: ethanol, regardless of the price you pay for it, contains less energy than gasoline. This means that your car won t go as far on a gallon of E85, and your fuel economy will decrease by 20-30 percent. This is bad news for consumers because even if the price of E85 at the pump is cheaper than gasoline, using ethanol may not be less expensive in the end.
  • Let s consider one example. The most fuel-efficient flexible-fuel vehicle available this year is the Chevrolet Impala. Using gasoline, it is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. By using E85, rated mileage drops to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

If you fill-up the Impala s 17-gallon tank at a station in the Midwest, you ll save $5.10 by using E85. So far, so good. However, you can t drive as far on E85 and will have to refuel sooner than if you had purchased conventional gasoline. In fact, your cost per mile is higher using E85: 9.7 cents/mile vs. 8.4 cents/mile for regular gas.

A 1.3 cent per mile difference may not seem like much, but over the course of a year s driving it adds almost $200 to your fuel costs.

    • Another issue is that E85 is widely available only in the Midwest. The DOE lists nearly 2,000 E85 stations in the United States, but most of those are in two states: Minnesota and Illinois. Other areas, even populous ones, have little E85 infrastructure. For example, New York, California and Florida have just 20 E85 stations combined. (The situation is getting better; South Carolina and Texas now boast 40 and 22 E85 stations, respectively.)

To put things in perspective, there are more than 150,000 stations nationwide selling gasoline. While all of them may not need to offer E85, it is clear that wider distribution is needed before E85 can begin to displace gasoline sales.

Better With Age: 10 Pros And Cons Of Dating An Older Man

    Like Us On Facebook

George Clooney and his new wife, Amal Alamuddin, are the talk of the town. But, it’s not all good things, as there’s also talk about their “bizarre” age gap: him 53, her 36.

In fact, a Boston Globe report went a step further to chart Clooney’s age difference history with previous girlfriends, the average being 9.73 years.

What about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who were 16 years apart when they were married? Or, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who are 25 years apart in age?

In their defense, I hardly grew up dating or crushing on men close to my age group. I always seem to date guys between 10 to 20 years older than me, and from my relationships comes some of the best memories and experiences.

I still get the common response from my friends: “He’s too old for you! Why would you date someone that old?” I’ve also had a few people in my life suggest that I do it because I am a “gold digger.”

So, the broad answer is this: To clarify, I’m not dating older men because I am a “gold digger.” It’s more important for me to pull my own weight and be financially stable. I have nothing against guys my age; I have tried dating them, but I have constantly come across the following:

    – They’re not ambitious enough, or they don’t have a go-getter attitude.

    – They’re not financially stable.

    – They still want to date around.

    – They have had baby mama or ex-wife drama.

    – They don’t have their sh*t together.

I’m not saying every guy in my age group is like this, but overall, my personal experience hasn’t been fulfilling for me. I started my media career at age 9 at a community TV station and my ambition level went up from there.

I save and invest my money; I’ve never been married and I have no kids. I had a normal childhood, but I have been living in the “adult world” since I was a kid. The only thing probably missing in my life is a partner, a published book and an owned property… maybe even a small business?

To elaborate even further, I’m an only child, and growing up, I never had many close friends. I can count them on maybe a hand and a half. I was teased and picked on a lot from the kids at school.

I never babysat the kids in my neighborhood once; I couldn’t relate to kids at all. I’m 34 now and I still can’t relate to kids. I don’t know the first thing to do with a child. Not to mention, I have no patience for them.

But something I could relate to well was adults. My father was a businessman who ran a successful chiropractor practice. I was around adults all my life — events, parties, meetings — so I really knew it no other way.

I guess that’s where I began the attraction for the older man type, and it used to freak my mother out. I would crush on older guys when I was 13, but I really didn’t start actually dating an older guy until I was 26; he was 40.

That relationship was fun and short-lived, but what I’ve learned since then has taken me a long way when dating older men. At the end of the day, I need to do what’s best for me.

Here are a list of pros and cons to consider if you decide to date older:

    Pros

    He’s More Experienced in Life

Whether it’s in his career, knowledge acquired overtime, relationships or even in the bedroom, this man knows what he’s doing and knows what he wants. He’s confident and can teach you a thing or two with his advice.

    He’s Financially Secure

He may be older, but he’s learned a lesson or two about making money, saving money and balancing his checkbook. He cares about his future and even retirement.

    He’s Emotionally Stable

The older men are the calmest human beings. This is great for me, since I am a whirlwind during the week and it balances me out. He’s been through multiple ups and downs in relationships, and his feelings are in check. Plus, he’s a great listener.

    He Loves Romance

With endless kisses, hugs and soft lit candles, he goes the distance to make sure you are happy and satisfied. When I would go away on trips and had my guy take care of my apartment, I always came home to flowers on the table, chocolate or homemade gifts. Aw!

    You Look Good Together

Besides feeling good together in public, you look great together, too. Even though there have been those people who have judged, you’ll be surprised that there are more people on your side than you think. I got this comment many times with my last relationship and felt even more confident hearing it.

    Cons

    He’s Set in His Ways

This is probably the most challenging thing to overcome when dating an older guy. With him, what you see is what you get. Although you can’t change a man (or even a woman for that matter), the key is to bend for one another so both of your needs are fulfilled.

    He’s Afraid of Commitment

When you come across an older man and learn he’s single, have you ever found yourself saying to your friends, “There’s a reason he’s alone and still single”? There’s always a reason, but the best thing is not to push. If it’s meant to be, it will be. For now, have fun and see where it might lead.

He Gets Compared To a Father Figure

This comment might make him and even you feel insecure. The important thing is how you two feel about one another and the good times you share. And don’t call him an “old man,” even if you’re joking; it will only make matters worse!

He Feels He Has “Power” in the Relationship

Personally and professionally, he has one up on you and may think only he has a right to call the shots in the relationship. It’s nice once in a while to let the man take the lead, but it shouldn’t be a power struggle. You both have something equally to give one another.

He’s Not the Life of the Party

He loves spending time with you, but may want to call it an early night instead of going to the next big party. Try to find the balance between going out and staying in.

Stay in for a couple nights by making dinner and watching a movie and doing one extreme outing during the week, even if it’s just for a bit. If he can’t, that’s what your friends are for!

    Retirement Pros Cons

Many workers spend their lives dreaming about the retirement, but the reality does not always meet the fantasy. There are pros and cons to retirement, both in terms of finances and in terms of lifestyle. Understanding the possible negative consequences of calling it a career can help you make a better transition from the role of worker to the role of new retiree.

    More Time

Time is a precious commodity, and one that retirees have in abundance. Without the responsibilities and stresses of a job, retirees are free to visit their children and grandchildren whenever they want. Retirees can also travel as much as their budgets allow, or use their new-found freedom to take up a new hobby or explore new interests. Some retirees find great satisfaction in doing charity work or serving as a volunteer in the community, and their new lifestyle gives them ample time to pursue those passions.

    Greater Flexibility

Retirement provides a greater level of flexibility and freedom, allowing former workers to do what they want to do when they want to do it. Retirees who love to travel are free to take advantage of last minute deals, since they can take off at a moment s notice without having a boss or the responsibilities of a job to worry about. Those who want to pursue a beloved hobby can do so full time, without having to worry about time off or interruptions from the office.

    Less Financial Security

Retirees may find that their new lifestyle provides more freedom, but less financial security. The lack of a steady paycheck can be a big shock, even for retirees with substantial retirement savings. It can take some time to make the transition between diligently saving for retirement and spending down that nest egg, and even well off retirees may worry that their money will run out too soon. This lack of financial security is even worse for retirees who lack a substantial nest egg and must rely on Social Security checks and perhaps a small monthly pension.

    Boredom

Many retirees find that they are simply bored after the first few years. After 30 or 40 years of getting up and going to work each day, some retirees simply feel adrift without the structure of a job. Retirees may also miss the personal and social aspects of employment, including day to day interactions with coworkers, shared stories and lunches out. Retirees can combat this boredom by taking on a part-time job, or by doing some consulting or charity work.

Pros & Cons Of Dating Older Women

She’s sexy. She doesn’t age. And she’s back. Stacey Dash stars in the new VH1 series called Single Ladies that premiered last night. While critics are quick to poo-poo on the series, like The Washington Post has ever so comically, we’re more distracted by the words “Stacey Dash” and “Single” appearing in the same sentence.

Dash, 45 (we know, we’re just as shocked as you are), is making a compelling case for dating older women. And success story Ashton Kutcher is the man that every man wants to be, and that every woman wants to be with. So why not date older women?

You’ve probably thought about dating an older woman. But before you take the proverbial plunge, read on and weigh the pros and cons of such a relationship.

    the cons

Let’s start with the not-so-good news.

    bag lady

Common sense dictates that you cannot be 40 years old and single, and not have a significant amount of baggage. Ex-boyfriends, husbands, children, ex-step-children, pending divorces, business pressures, financial obligations, and debts can often be part of the package.

You must be ready and willing to accept this reality if you are going to get romantically linked with an older woman. This is not to say that you will be asked to deal with these issues per se; rather, you must realize that an older woman generally has more to worry about than that bushy-tailed co-ed at your dorm.

    mrs. robinson

One cannot deny the allure of the older woman, younger man relationship. But, this relationship remains slightly taboo, unlike the other way around, where the man is much older than the woman, which is perfectly acceptable. After all, no one raised an eyebrow when Catherine Zeta-Jones married Michael Douglas.

Like it or not, by getting involved with an older woman, you are putting yourself in a situation where the moral majority people like your parents and boss will frown upon you. On the up side, you may become your buddies’ hero, and they will start begging you to reveal what it’s like.

In any case, people will talk. If you are secure enough in the relationship, or you actually like the attention, then by all means, proceed.

On to the good news about being caught in a cougar’s grip.

Sukam Solar Home UPS/Inverter Pros and Cons

Solar energy is the only solution for rising power crisis in India. Installing normal inverters for power backup in Homes is becoming inevitable even for middle class families.

Many states in India are suffering more than 14 hours power cut per day. Normal inverters which charge the battery with power from grid actually gives back only 80 percent of energy it saves from grid power, the balance 20 % energy is wasted during conversion process. No inverters are 100 percent efficient.

In each end every home where normal inverter installed, the 20% energy is wasted during conversion process. The numbers would be very high if the calculation is carried throughout the country.

So, charging the battery with solar power is the only solution to stop this power loss and to generate green energy from sun light.

Sukam the leading power backup solution provider in India has wide range of Hybrid solar Inverter models for Industrial purpose. For Home use, Sukam has one successful solar inverter model called ‘Sukam Brainy’.

Sukam Brainy Inverter – Home inverter – Package

    Capacity: 850 VA

    Battery: 150 va sukam battery

    Waveform: Pure sinewave

    Charging option: Solar and Grid

    Solar Panel. 80watts

Why they call ‘Hybrid Solar’ instead of ‘Solar’?

‘Sukam Brainy’ model inverter is hybrid solar inverter. It charges the battery with solar power and grid power as well, so it is named as Hybrid Solar inverter.

    # Sukam Brainy inverter – Pros

Sukam Brainy inverter charges the battery with solar power as primary source and grid power as secondary source.

When the battery is fully charged, the inverter automatically switches to battery power even when the grid power is available. This facility is not available on other normal brands. So we can save some money on our electric bills by maximizing the usage of solar power.

If installed as additional inverter for home, solar power would be Very helpful during long and frequent power cuts where minimum required power for charging the battery is not available from grid.

Saves electricity bills even under zero power cut situation.

It generates power from solar; no noise no fumes, green energy!

    # Cons

Charging is not possible when the inverter is in battery mode. Not useful during power cuts more than 12 hours. Useful under situations like 3 hours power cut per day.

This inverter uses the battery daily even under zero power cut situation, so the battery gets old in 2 to 3 years and needs replacement.

High cost- Total cost of the normal 850 VA solar inverter package costs around Rs.30, 000/- which is double priced compared to normal inverter package without solar option. The costs of solar panels are high and not affordable to middle class people.

    Dear Karthik,
It depends on weather condition. Approximately an eighty watts solar panel would take 2.25 hours to charge a 150ah battery to 20%.

Hello Admin, I m planning to buy 850va interver and came across Sukam Briny Hybrid Solar Inverter. i ve read ur review regarding it and i called the concern sales people, but they are suggesting three solar panels instead of the provided one solar panel which is 80watts. they say it needs 240watt panel to use optimum solar energy. i m totally confused with these options. i was convinced with Microtec inverter with exit battery, but this solar inverter is bit motivating. Please help me

    Dear Kishore,
What you heard from technicians is partially true, three 80 watts panels can give you optimum performance, but installing extra two panels is optional , you can install it anytime. If you are budget conscious, we recommend to go for it with one 80 watts panel initially, after watching the performance you can install more panels in future.

We recommend solar hybrid inverters for our readers than any other conventional inverters. Solar hybrid inverters can be installed without solar panels, they perform in the same way as normal inverters, you can install solar panels later.

is there any special battery for solar energy now i have a new exide 150ah battery can i use the battery for your solar panel and sukam home inverter

    Dear Raju,
Some companies are taking advantage of people s growing interest on solar energy and trying to label their normal inverter batteries as specially designed batteries for solar power, it is just a marketing strategy! We recommend semitubular and tubular batteries for solar hybrid inverters.

I have Purchased I KW panels, but in search of good Solar Inverter, which after charging the battery completely, can supply the solar Energy Directly for Use,Does the SU-Kam Brainy has this Facility.
Also is it avialble in 1KW option or more than that.
    Please Advise

    Hi
If you have 1KW Panels if you want to buy this inverter then use 12V 240VA panels with this inverter use rest panels with solar charger(which is available in market) to charge battery directly.

I read ur article it was super. Can u pls help me out
in my village around 12hrs power cut there. I am planning to buy Sukam Brainy inverter. Could u pls give a proper quote for 8 hours backup

I want Sukam pannels to attach to my inverter. I am using su kam batteries N sukam Inverter. Then what would be cost of pannel per each watt. I am planning to install 250 watt pannel

    Dear Panch,
Normally dealers would charge Rs.55/watt for solar panels with some additions installation charges.

I am going to buy an inverter of 850 VA, Sukam make. Can I convert to solar inverter at a later stage? Only the Solar panels required to convert it to solar inverter?

    Dear Mohankumar,
Better you go for Hybrid solar Inverter now itself, it has inbuilt charge controller to regulate the current from solar panels.
For normal inverters, you have to purchase it separately and you may face some compatibility issue too.

    Dear Kala,
An 850 va Pure sine wave sukam normal inverter would cost Rs.5500/- (Hybrid inverter would cost more)

Sukam 150 ah deep cycle battery would cost around Rs.10000 to 11,000 /-

    Some Info about solar panels,

230, 240 or 250 watts. 24 volt Poly crystalline solar panels would cost around Rs.13000 or Rs.55 per watt.

There is an another type MONO crystalline solar panels. which is superior to poly crystalline solar panels.

Mono crystalline solar panels are more energy efficient than polycrystalline panels, which means you get more current. So, naturally it is bit expensive than polycrystalline solar panels.

250 watts 24 volt MONO crystalline solar panel would cost around Rs.20,000 to 21,000/-

So, you got price quote of Rs.48,000/-. this is way expensive than the present market. People know nothing about solar panels and prices, so this is looting time for solar dealers.

The cost of whole configuration(inverter, battery and solar panels) should not cross
    Rs.32,000/- (for polycrystalline solar panels)

Rs.38,000/- (for Mono crystalline solar panels)

How to Date in NYC: Manhattan Dating Advice from the Pros

By Pamela Skillings. Manhattan, NY Expert

    Updated March 31, 2016.

Dating in New York City is always an adventure. You never know if a particular night out will turn into an episode of Sex and the City. The Odd Couple. or Law Order. Wouldn t it be nice to have some expert advice on New York City dating etiquette and get some pointers on what NOT to do?

Unfortunately, I have been out of the dating game for years and was never very good at it to begin with. So I asked New York-based relationship experts, matchmakers, and authors Tamsen Fadal and Matt Titus to share some tips on how to find love (or at least a good time) in New York City.

They offer unique his-and-hers perspectives on NYC dating dilemmas and put forth some great tips on just how to date in New York City.

What are the hardest things about dating in New York City? Is there NYC-specific dating etiquette that people should know about?

Matt: I have to say that New York City men have got it made. There are 200,000 more single women than single men in the Big Apple, so men are kings here! And I will be the first one to admit that most NYC men have a little bit of an entitlement issue when it comes to women.

Tamsen: I wouldn t say kings, Matthew. But I would call them repercussionless daters. Their mentality is such that if the woman they are on a date with isn t giving them exactly what they want, they have no problem ending the date abruptly and moving on to the next woman, who they believe is around the corner waiting in desperation to go out with them. Plus, many times these men are in absolutely no hurry to commit to one woman.

Matt: Well, why should they be? They have way too many options with all of the single women out there more than willing to go out with them.

A lot of women in New York start to compromise what they really want in a man just to have a dating life. The best way for a woman to date in New York City is to keep it casual and make sure that any man interested in her understands that she is dating other guys.

Tamsen: This accomplishes two objectives. It immediately gives the message to the guy that other men are interested in her, which validates him and his interest in her. Secondly, men love to compete against one another when it comes to female attention. By telling him that he is one of many other guys vying for her attention, it will make him want to be the best of the rest and try really hard.

Where are the best places to meet great guys in New York?

Tamsen : I recommend uncontrived environments: Central Park dog runs, Whole Foods, and running clubs. Charity events and volunteer groups are also great. Chelsea Piers and Harry s Cafe on Wall Street are also very man-friendly places.

Where are the best places to meet great women in New York?

Matt: I like the fashion district and the West Village. as well as the cosmetic departments in the three B s: Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman. and Barneys.

As professional matchmakers, can you share the most common dating and relationship mistakes that you see people make?

Tamsen says that men make the following mistakes:

    1. They do not follow through
    2. They ask questions about a woman s romantic past
    3. They have lost the ability to be chivalrous
    4. They do not communicate well
    5. They can be emotionally unavailable

Matt says women make the following mistakes:

    1. They call guys first
    2. They sleep with men too soon
    3. They ask the guy to define the relationship
    4. They are too available
    5. They allow everything to be on the man s terms
