Internet Safety! –Creating Savvy Citizens: Current Resources for Digital Citizenship Instruction

Internet Safety

Due to the Broadband Data Communication Act and Fayette County Public Schools board policy, 08.2323, internet safety and digital citizenship must be taught to all FCPS students in grades K-12. This site serves as a resource for Internet Safety Coordinators on the school level. If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact Paula Setser-Kissick .

Responsibilities of Internet Safety/Digital Citizenship Coordinators:
  • Make students’ digital safety a priority for both you and your staff.
  • Attend district training each year — either beginning or refresher.
  • Share all district information with your principal.
  • Mark the deadline for completing all instruction on your calendar (always in December).
  • Compile age-appropriate lessons, etc. for delivering the content. (Note: FCPS purchases iSafe where you can access its curriculum. However, you may use any combination of resources as long as the topics are covered with students.)
  • Submit FCPS School Internet Safety Instructional Plan with the district by the due date.
  • Complete your iSafe training. if you are a new coordinator, and submit your certificate to the district person in charge of Internet Safety.
  • Check periodically with staff members in your building who are also responsible for teaching lessons and make sure the instruction is being delivered.
  • Understand that ALL responsibility on the school level for following federal law and board policy ultimately falls on you and the principal.

Online dating is the best possible way to meet fantastic people who share your interests and passions. Every year, tens of thousands of people get married as a result of meeting on an online dating service. Millions of people are doing it and, in general, online dating is regarded as a safe medium for meeting potential dates.

Your online dating safety begins with educating yourself on how to improve your experience and be safe doing it. Below you will find 10 tips to being safe during your online dating experience.

Ten Essential Online Dating Safety Tips

1. Trust Your Gut Instinct
Your instinct is a powerful medium for knowing when something doesn’t feel right. It is also a great way to measure when to move forward with someone and when to turn and run. As you read profiles, responses to emails, have phone conversations, and meet in person your instincts help tell you if something is right or if something is out of alignment. The out of alignment message is your cue to be careful, back off, or proceed with extreme caution. Trust your gut instinct, it’s the most powerful psychological tool you have at your disposal.

2. Don’t Provide Personal Information Too Soon
Your home phone number and full name provide easy ways to track who you are and where you live. Armed with just your home phone number, a person can easily gain access to your income information, home address, and even learn the value of your home. Armed with your first and last name, a person can do searches to determine quite a bit of information on you – where you work, what you do, and even what your home phone number is. So in the initial stages of communication, guard your personal information. As far as phone communication, see the next tip.

3. Use a Free Email Account
If you decide to move your communication from the anonymous email feature provided by the majority of online dating services then provide an email address that isn’t your regular one. Sign up for a free Yahoo. Hotmail, or Gmail account that you use just for online dating. Don’t put your full name in the From field – only your first name or something else. This protects you from a person being able to search your normal email address to find out more information about you.

4. Use a Cell Phone or Anonymous Phone Service to Chat
When it’s time to move your communication to the next level (talking on the phone), never give out your home phone number. Either provide a cell phone number, use Skype to communicate, or use an anonymous phone service. It’s just an added protection barrier until you get to know the person better.

5. Beware of Married People
It’s unfortunate, but a lot of married people do use online dating services. They’ll even go as far as to meet people. A few years ago, MSNBC reported that a study found that up to 30% of people using online dating services are married! 6. Look for Questionable Characteristics in Your Communication
As you chat via email and on the phone you may be able to start to pick out characteristics of the other person. Are they controlling? Do they seem to anger easily? Do they avoid some of your questions? These can be questionable characteristics that tell you it’s time to move on.

7. Ask for a Recent Photo
There’s nothing wrong in asking someone if their photos are recent. If they don’t have a photo, request a recent one. It’s important for you to get a good look at the person you may eventually meet. Plus your instincts from your communications and their photos may provide you with valuable insight into the person. Plus, if they tell you the photo is recent and you meet and see a major difference, then you’ll know the person lied and can cut the date short. If a person lies about their photo or profile then that is a red flag to no longer pursue the relationship.

8. Stick With Paid Online Dating Services
Free online dating services provide a greater opportunity for potentially dangerous individuals. They don’t ever have to provide a credit card or other information that identifies them. There is some truth to the saying, you get what you pay for .

9. Don’t Get a False Sense of Security
Some online dating services claim to offer background checks and when signing up for such a service you may find it easier to let your guard down. Don’t. Laws differ from state-to-state when it comes to background checks and there are even several states where checks can’t be effectively performed. Because of the inconsistency, criminals/wrong doers can and do get into services that do background checks . Never let your guard down.

10. Meet in a Public Place for Your First Meeting
When it’s time to schedule that first exciting face-to-face meeting, arrange to meet in a public place and provide your own transportation. Your initial meeting will tell you a lot about the other person, including whether or not he/she lied in their profile. Your gut instincts will kick in. Never accept an offer to be picked up at your house. Make sure that a friend knows where you are at and who you are with.

By following these tips, you’ll help protect yourself from being an easy prey to someone who may have ulterior motives. With an average of 100+ marriages a day from online dating, you can see that the experience can be both safe and rewarding. Keep it safe!

Teen Dating Safety

While the percentage of teens who aren t dating has risen in the ten years leading up to 2004, according to the Child Trends Data Bank (CTDB), many teens do date, and in 2005 1 in 11 high school students, CTDB reports, was the victim of dating violence.

The Bureau of Justice Special Report in May, 2000, concerning Intimate Partner Violence and based on data from 1993-1998, reported that the highest rate of intimate violence is perpetrated against women ages 16 to 24. Though there is more intimate violence against women, there is also intimate violence against men. Furthermore, most of intimate violence occurs in the victim s home. In fact, CTDB reports that the chance does not differ significantly for male and female high school students of being hurt by a dating partner, although they further report that physical harm caused by female students is more often defensive.

Less dramatic, but worth considering, is that dating frequently, CTDB reports, is associated with lower academic achievement and motivation.

General Teen Dating Safety

Whether officially dating or simply going out with a group of friends, teens should let their parents know

  • who they will be with
  • who is responsible for transportation
  • who is home (parents?) if they will be at someone s house
  • where they will be
  • what, in general, they will be doing
  • when they will be home

They should also contact their parents if plans change, which they sometime legitimately do. Any particular limits on behavior, including but not limited to sexual behavior and mind-altering substances, should be spelled out.

Since teens should not go on trips of any duration without being able to communicate and though you may not wish your teen to have a cell phone, this is a way of ensuring that they can get in touch; if necessary, you can lend them yours, or have a cell phone that is used only as needed.

One or more of these items may need to be negotiated, as may frequency of dating or what days dates may occur on.

Safety When Meeting a New Person

There are some obvious steps for safety that teens can take when dating someone for the first time or meeting someone who is not previously known. Double-dating or going out in a group is a good choice in this situation. Meeting in a public place during daylight hours is also advisable. Teens should no either use any substances that could impair their judgment nor go somewhere particularly in a vehicle without someone who has. They should also guard any drink they might have, as well as personal belongings and have a plan in place for an alternate way home (e.g. transportation by a parent) if they need one for any reason.

Particularly when with someone new, being able to contact others is important and a cell phone is helpful for this. Teens going out should leave a general plan of their itinerary, call if it changes, and have a curfew for their return.

Teen Dating Online

Given that adults have experienced difficulties when moving from an on-line to a dating relationship, it is best to keep teens dating in-person though if they become romantically involved, they are likely to communicate by IM and e-mail. The Pew Internet Family Life Project reports in 2006 in Romance in America that 38% of married and committed couples met at work or school, and 34% through friends or family, while Internet meeting only happened for 3%.

Warning Signs of Teen Dating Violence or Teen Relationship Abuse

Though none of these symptoms is definitive, these are some things one may look for as indicators of dating violence or relationship abuse.

  • Signs of injury
  • Behavior or mood changes
  • Unusual secrecy
  • Problems in school

Dating does not always and need not involve a sexual relationship, but teenagers who are engaging in sex are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases and if they are a heterosexual couple having intercourse pregnancy .

Sexual harassment, while it may be more often thought of as occurring between people who are not in a relationship, can by definition as any unwanted sexual approach that makes the recipient uncomfortable or interferes with his or her life occur within a dating relationship. Teens should both feel empowered to say no within relationships and should understand the difference between the conversation that occurs when two parties have different ideas and are discussing the situation and the pressure and unsuitable advances that are defined as harassment.

Welcome to the Homeland Security Defense Coalition and our Homeland Security University College project

The Homeland Security Defense Coalition and the Homeland Security University College project was established in October of 2001 to provide a single source for high level education and training in the field of counter-terrorism. The HSDC HSU project programs will lead to a certificate, diploma, or degree in one comprehensive program.

The Homeland Security Defense Coalition and the Homeland Security University College project has been a labor of love post 9/11/01. The Homeland Security Defense Coalition is a non-profit organization managed by 40 volunteers who have sought non-governmental funding through no less than two dozen foundations, none of which have been able to provide project funding. Our volunteers have provided nine years of their time in hopes of eventually joining us on a full-time career basis. This great team has provided their professional expertise in counterterrorism and business administration to build our infrastructure so that we are ready at the starting gates to begin this worthwhile Homeland Security University College project.

We have recruited and brought together national and international experts in anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism, who have developed, designed and will be teaching our seminars and courses. Most are recently retired former or present FBI agents, federal law enforcement agents, criminal investigators, emergency and disaster planning professionals, lawyers, US Border Patrol personnel, US Customs professionals and several currently in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Consolidating the best national security training and education courses and offering them through one source will enable private and government agencies the opportunity to send their personnel for homeland specialized homeland security training and education.

This project has been 14 years in the planning and is designed to ensure the highest level of modern up-to-date course content. Courses have and will be continually reviewed and up-dated to remain current in content and consistent with current trends and threats.

Unlike similar programs that are appearing across the country, our seminar, certificate, diploma and degree courses and training programs are designed specifically to address the needs of those employed or seeking employment in a homeland security related profession, public safety or public administration with a concentration in homeland security.

How to Stay Safe While Dating

While I ate my dinner, she drank hers — then refused to leave. And, according to her, why should she? My acquaintance of 12 hours bizarrely insisted that we were living together. The situation felt menacing — would I find a rabbit stew boiling on the stove? — so I summoned my next-door neighbor, a woman, for help. The two of us spent 45 minutes coaxing my surprise head case to leave, but it took a threat to call the police to finally get her out the door.

Does it jar you to find a man writing about dating safety? Don’t let it. As my fatal attraction to that mad mermaid proved, scary situations can pop up for anyone in the dating world — female or male, online or not. That’s why everyone who is part of that world must take some basic steps to ensure his or her physical safety. At the very least, consider adopting the approaches below; all of them draw on my 12 years of recent online dating experience .

1. Gentlemen first. When you’ve exchanged emails with a prospect and you feel it’s time to furnish phone numbers, the man should offer his first. If he doesn’t, the woman should ask him to do so. I can’t think of any good reason why a legitimately eligible man would withhold his digits; if he does, that’s ample cause to feel unsafe. Give the dude a pass.

2. Pick a safe spot for your first date. A busy daytime cafe is ideal. There isn’t much privacy, but you’ll be grateful for the presence of others if an unpleasant situation develops. If your date refuses to meet at a cafe or insists on a less public place, simply move on.

3. Know when to bail. I once had a coffee date with a woman who grew increasingly angry — and vocal — over her mistreatment by an ex-boyfriend. When she turned her attack on me, I got up and left — and was thankful for an audience to witness my exit.

4. Call for backup, Part 1. If a coffee date shows up with a bad attitude. a bad temper or a foul mouth, head for the door. Do likewise if he talks about becoming sexual after 15 minutes, or attempts to corral you into a relationship. If you feel truly threatened, explain the situation to the cafe manager and ask him or her to walk you to your car.

5. Call for backup, Part 2. I was enjoying a second date at a restaurant when my companion took a call during dinner. I was pretty sure I knew what was going on.

I’m just fine, she told the caller, then stowed the phone with an apologetic smile.

What would your friend have done if you hadn’t picked up? I asked her.

She had instructions to call the police, she replied.

Good tip. Smart woman.

6. Ask the right questions. Certain queries can reveal a lot of info in a short amount of time about a person you’ve just met. You might ask, for example, if your date has close friends. A yes indicates he or she is capable of connecting with others; a no suggests a lack of intimacy skills.

7. Be safe at home. As I learned the hard way with my would-be Glenn Close, it’s unwise to welcome anyone into your abode unless you know them well. If you’re unsure, consider asking another couple to join you.

My current girlfriend (whom I met online. by the way) invited me into her home after only our second date. I accepted, thanking her for her trust, but later mentioned that she could have been putting herself at risk.

We all want to believe the best about people, but a date you don’t really know deserves only a modicum of trust. So rather than rolling the dice when it comes to your personal safety, try following the steps above. Who knows? They might even be a shortcut to finding the right person out there.

Note: Dating services’ official rules for dating online are located under their websites’ terms of use. They suggest appropriate behavior, but screening is minimal — so I strongly urge you to use the tips above to create your own safety zone. Keep in mind that you can block any other member if you ever start to feel that safety is an issue.

About the Program

This program provides extensive theory and hands-on training pertaining to the heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning fields. This growing trades area changes rapidly and this program incorporates studies dealing with current HVAC topics including green technologies. It also provides foundational skills in general sheet metal, gas, and electrical. The practical courses taking place in the HVAC Centre are designed to train students to enter the field with all the skills necessary for employment. Students may have the opportunity to write the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) G3 and G2 Gas Technician exams.

Admission Procedures

  • An academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
  • Ten (10) additional marks are added to each advanced level, OAC, U,U/C, and post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
  • A sound mathematical and English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.

Program Requirements

  • Applicants are advised that manual dexterity and the ability to work at heights and in various climatic conditions are frequent prerequisites for employment in this field. The physical demands of this program reflect industry requirements (e.g. lifting, carrying, climbing, etc.) and require students to be physically fit in order to participate adequately.
  • Students are expected to demonstrate the same attention to attendance, punctuality and conduct as would be required by the business or industry in which they expect to be employed.
  • Students are required to provide their own CSA-approved footwear, hard hat, safety glasses, and specified hand tools. The college provides all other tools required. Students will have the opportunity to buy their specified hand tools in a kit during the first week of the program for a discounted cost. The list of required tools will be provided to students during orientation.

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a needs-based program designed to help Ontario students cover the cost of post-secondary education. Funded by the federal and provincial governments, OSAP is intended to promote equality of opportunity for post-secondary studies through direct financial assistance for educational costs and living expenses. These interest-free loans are intended to supplement your financial resources and those of your family. The majority of students apply for loan assistance via the OSAP website. Pathways Credit Transfer

Conestoga pathways enable students to build on their academic achievements in order to earn a degree or additional credential. Pathways are formed through agreements between Conestoga programs or partner institutions. View the transfer agreement opportunities for this program.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student s Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

Debit Cards and Identity Theft: Are You at Risk?

An increasing number of people are keeping track of their personal finances and control spending by using debit cards instead of credit cards when buying gas, groceries, and other daily expenses. Debit cards, or check cards, prevent people from overdrawing their checking or savings account. This is fairly smart money management in theory and in practice. However, as with credit cards, using a debit card carries some risks, and the rise in debit card use has led to a rise in debit card identity theft.

Victims of debit card identity theft often wonder how a thief gained access to their Personal Identification Number (PIN), which is the key to using a debit card to commit fraud. These are some of the more effective ways that thieves obtain debit card PINs:

  • Stolen purses and wallets
    Sometimes, a victim will make it easy for a thief to commit debit card identity theft by writing a PIN down on a piece of paper and storing it in his or her billfold. If a purse or wallet is lost or stolen, the thief has all the necessarily information to begin stealing from the victim and merchants alike. To prevent this from happening to you, memorize your PINs and never write them down.
  • Skimmers
    Every time you use a credit or debit card, a device reads the information stored on the magnetic strip on the back of the card. Thieves use that same technology to create skimmers that do the same thing. Skimmers can easily fit in the palm of a hand, and it only takes a moment for the device to skim and store your name and other account information. When you hand your debit card to another person, make sure to keep a sharp eye on it at all times, and be wary of any cashier who drops your debit card behind the counter for a moment.
  • Cameras installed at ATMs
    Automated Teller Machines make it easy for you to withdraw cash whenever you need it. However, the ubiquity of ATMs, combined with camera technology, can make it easy for thieves to install cameras at ATMs that can read numbers on a debit card and record the choices your fingers make as you enter your PIN. When entering your PIN into an ATM, be aware of your surroundings, and carefully cover the keypad.
  • Direct observation
    Identity thieves love lines at ATMs; they can surreptitiously watch people type their PINs into the keypad. Often, they work with an accomplice who robs the victim, and, with the PIN, they can access funds in the account in minutes. When using an ATM, again, be aware of your surroundings. If the next person in line is a little too close for comfort, ask for some space before shielding the keypad and entering your PIN, or simply postpone your transaction and move to the back of the line.

Unlike credit cards, which provide some protection to account holders, victims of debit card identity theft can lose a lot more if they fail to notice the theft and act swiftly. The Electronic Fund Transfer Act limits a debit cardholder s liability to $50 if he or she notifies the bank in the first two business days after the card (or information stored on it) is lost or stolen. After two business, the victim can be liable for up to $500 in losses, and if he or she waits 60 days or more to report the loss, the victim might be liable for the entire amount stolen from the account.
