Wouldn t you love to go on vacation knowing you don t have to check your email? If you can t rely on an assistant to tend to your digital communication while you re away, an out of office message is the next best thing.

Here are some tips on how to set up an autoresponder with Gmail and what to keep in mind.

Prepare Your Email Autoresponder

No matter how well you communicate your scheduled vacation, people will still try to get in touch with you. An autoresponder will remind them of your absence. Follow this strategy:

  • Add contact information for urgent matters to your auto responder. This could be the email address of a trusted colleague or a phone number under which you can be reached in an emergency.
  • Set up the autoresponder only for people in your contact list. This prevents random people to get hold of your emergency number or other contact details.
  • Set up forwards for important emails. If you are expecting to hear from someone specific or on a particular topic, make sure those important emails are routed to a colleague who can respond immediately.

Set Up the Gmail Vacation Responder

You can find Gmail s Vacation Responder under general settings. Click the cogwheel in the top right of your inbox and scroll to the bottom of the General tab. Choose the dates, compose your message in WYSIWYG (formatted / rich text) or Plain Text. and turn the vacation responder on. To prevent strangers or spammers from getting hold of additional contact information or learn that your email account is active, select to only send a response to people in your Contacts. Gmail allows you set a first and an optional last day. meaning you won t have to remember to turn the autoresponder off when you get back.

Forward Selected Emails Using Gmail Filters

The vacation responder is a standard message that while active is sent to anyone (on your contact list) who sends you an email. As mentioned above, some emails might require an immediate and personal response. This is where Gmail s filters come in.

Note that in Gmail you can only forward emails to confirmed email addresses. If you want to forward emails to a colleague, you ll need their help. Click the cogwheel in the top right of your Gmail inbox, select Settings. and switch to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Click the Add a forwarding address button, enter the forwarding email address and click Next to trigger the confirmation email. Your colleague will receive a code and instructions on how to confirm the request. If they forward you the email, you can also enter the confirmation code yourself to verify their email address.

To set up your filter, expand the search options above your Gmail inbox. Enter the sender s email address in the from field or keywords in the subject or has the words field. You can add several email addresses and use search operators Become Better At Finding Stuff With Search Engines: Boolean Search Logic Explained Become Better At Finding Stuff With Search Engines: Boolean Search Logic Explained It only takes Google’s thousands of servers half a second to query approximately 50 billion indexed pages, it takes you significantly longer to scan only the first page of search results. In the example shown below, I selected a forwarding email address and applied a label to the forwarded email. If you do the same, you can quickly identify forwarded emails based on their label once you return from your vacation.

Instead of forwarding emails, you can also set up a custom canned response Email Faster Better With Canned Responses Email Faster Better With Canned Responses Don t have time to cook lunch? Final Preparations Before You Leave

It would be quite disappointing if your carefully set up system failed. Imagine the stress upon your return. It s essential that you test your out of office messages and forwards before you leave. You can use your own secondary email address and dummy filters to test autoresponders, filters, and forwards.

What would be equally embarrassing is if your vacation responder remained active long after you ve returned home. If you have a To Do list or a calendar, create a task or schedule to turn the autoresponder and/or filters off upon your return.

Here s a little recap of the entire procedure from Steve Dotto:

What to Do When You Return

Hopefully, your system worked and all urgent emails have been dealt with by your friendly colleague. When you re ready to tackle your inbox, follow these steps:

  • Turn off the vacation responder.
  • Disable vacation-specific filters forwards.
  • Go through your inbox using the Inbox Zero strategy 4 Simple Steps to Achieving Maintaining Inbox Zero in Gmail 4 Simple Steps to Achieving Maintaining Inbox Zero in Gmail Read More outlined above.
  • Check your Sent folder or a label you used to see which emails were forwarded or received a canned response.
  • Get in touch with colleagues who handled urgent emails and ask them to bring you up to speed.
  • Follow up where necessary.
  • Re-subscribe to newsletters if needed.

Additionally, counselor employment should increase by at least 12%, depending on specialty.

The BLS reported that the median per-hour rate for social service occupations as of May 2015 depended on the person’s focus. For example, mental health and substance abuse social workers earned a median of $20.28, which translates to $42,170 per full-time year, while those that the BLS grouped as ‘all other social workers’ earned a median of $28.15, or $58,560 per year.

Graduates of master’s degree programs have obtained the necessary academic degree needed to pursue state licensing and certification. Application for licensure should be made with the state board where the applicant wishes to practice. (Photo: Kathryn Parker Almanas )

J ennifer Hughes s placenta was delivered ten minutes after her first child, just before midnight on March 31. It was on the large side, with a liverish texture and a bluish tinge; it measured nine inches in diameter and weighed a pound and a half. Placentas are considered biohazardous waste by the medical Establishment and are usually disposed of accordingly. Some hospitals send the afterbirth in formaldehyde to a pathology lab for analysis before it is carted off by a tissue-disposal service; others toss it out with bloody miscellany in special containers.

But in the birth plan that Hughes brought with her to Beth Israel Medical Center, she specified that she wanted to keep her placenta, for cultural reasons. Complying with New York State health regulations, which says that hospitals may, at the request of a patient or patient s representative, return a healthy placenta for disposition by the patient, the hospital allowed her to take it home, and even packed it up for her.

In some cultures, it is customary to bury the placenta and plant a tree over it.

Hughes had other plans. She was going to eat it.

E arly the next morning, a 28-year-old woman named Jennifer Mayer is driving a Subaru from Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge with an opaque takeout container in the passenger seat. Inside the container is a gallon-size Ziploc bag, and inside the bag is Jennifer Hughes s placenta.

Mayeran upbeat, blue-eyed blonde from upstate New Yorkis a professional placenta-preparer. Her job is to transform placentas into supplements that are said to alleviate postpartum depression, aid in breastmilk production and lactation, act as a uterine tonic, and replenish nutrients lost during pregnancy. Her clients are mostly middle-class, like Hughes and her husband, Doug, who are college-educated, in their thirties, and live on a gentrifying street in Crown Heights. On this dreary April morning, Mayer is driving the afterbirth to their apartment to begin preparing it.

It s the freshest placenta I ve ever worked with! she says, glancing over at the container as the car lurches through traffic. Mayer speaks about the organ in tones most women reserve for newborns: perfect, beautiful, precious.

Her enthusiasm isn t unfounded. The placenta feeds the baby until birth, filtering toxins while letting in vitamins, minerals, oxygen, and other nutrients from the mother s bloodstream. It even helps reduce the risk of transmitting viruses, including HIV, from mother to child.

Mayer, who also works as a massage therapist and doula, first became interested in placentas as a student at the University of Colorado. After reading up on the purported benefits of consuming one s afterbirth and learning that a client was planning to try it, Mayer decided that she wanted to offer her customers placenta capsules: dried, ground afterbirth packaged into a clear pill no bigger than a regular vitamin supplement.

The technique, called encapsulation, was not widely practiced in Colorado and, until quite recently, was practically unknown on the East Coast. But Mayer found a doula who conducted training sessions with donated placentas, and started her business, Brooklyn Placenta Services, shortly thereafter.

They re happy pills, Mayer says. They re made by your body, for your body. Why wouldn t you want to try?

I n 1930, the researchers Otto Tinklepaugh and Carl Hartman described a female macaque monkey eating her placenta. After licking the afterbirth, she begins the grueling task of consuming this tough fibrous mass, they wrote. Holding the organ in her hands, she bites and tears at it with her teeth. Tinklepaugh and Hartman could not determine the precise reason why macaquesand virtually every other land mammaleat their own placenta. To this day, the reasons remain unclear.

Mark Kristal, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Buffalo, is the country s leading (and quite possibly only) authority on placentophagia, the practice of placenta consumption. He has been researching the phenomenon for twenty years, and concludes that it must offer a fundamental biological advantage to all mammals. What this advantage is, he writes in one of his papers, is still a mystery in fact, a double mystery. We are not sure either of the immediate causes nor are we sure of the consequences of the behavior. But placentas have carried a special spiritual significance in some cultures. In ancient Egypt, it had its own hieroglyph, and the Ibo tribe in Nigeria and Ghana treats the placenta like a child s dead twin. In traditional Chinese medicine, small doses of human placenta are sometimes dried, mixed with herbs, and ingested to alleviate, among other things, impotence and lactation conditions. And in modern medicine, doctors often bank umbilical-cord blood to treat genetic diseases with harvested stem cells.

According to Kristal, the first recorded placentophagia movement in America began in the seventies, when people residing in communes would cook up a placenta stew and share it among themselves. It s a New Age phenomenon, he explains. Every ten or twenty years people say, We should do this because it s natural and animals do it. But it s not based on science. It s a fad.

What Is The Cloud? (And Why Small Businesses Need To Care)

Cloud computing has come a long way to become a mainstream technology tool for business.

Earlier this year, Parallels, a software company that enables companies like and Sprint to offer cloud services to small and medium businesses (SMB), reported that the cloud services industry grew to $45 billion worldwide last year. Helping to drive that were 6 million SMBs purchasing their first cloud service last year.

And, the report projects that the market is expected to grow annually at a rate of 28 percent through 2015 to be a $95 billion industry.

The cloud does for IT what companies like UPS and Federal Express did for the shipping industry, Stephen Braat, senior director and general manager of cloud and managed solutions for CDW, said.

“When it comes to getting product to customers, their technology enables them to do it on a larger scale at a lower cost,” he said. “The cloud is the great technology equalizer.”

Technology is a huge driver of competitive advantage, and historically, technology that larger companies used was not available to smaller companies, who typically have 50 employees or less.

“The technology that Wal-Mart was using for its supply chain was one that smaller businesses couldn’t keep up with,” Dan Levin, chief operating officer of Box, said. “Now, for the first time, there is technology available that doesn’t require hardware or technical expertise and gives small companies the same technology as a big company. That gets rid of the technology advantage, and that’s a huge change.”

Rather than thinking of the cloud — computing capability delivered over a network — as a type of technology (because there are at least three dozen categories of cloud computing), Braat recommends seeing it as a way of delivering consumer technology.

Many small businesses typically don’t have an IT staff or technical expertise in-house, so folks making decisions don’t always know what questions to ask about their company’s tech infrastructure, Eric Diamond, CEO of Tribeca Cloud, a company that helps small businesses understand how to implement cloud services, said.

“One of the biggest things we see is that they don’t define the requirements of their business needs,” he said. “What are you trying to obtain? Do you want to save money, use a new application, access an enterprise-level app? Then you have to do your research.”

There are four deployment models of cloud. Public (available to the general public over the Internet), private (within a corporate firewall), community (shared between organizations) and hybrid (a combination of the three).

Braat said benefits of the cloud are that it is on demand; burstable, meaning a lot of it can be used; elastic, can use very little; and metered, so a business only pays for what it consumes. In addition, businesses that use the cloud have seen employee productivity increase, which in turn drives innovation and speeds technologies to market, he added.

Levin said the public cloud is a “game changer” for small businesses because it gives them access to enterprise-level applications. The private cloud is reserved more for larger companies that have their own IT staff, data centers and are investing large amounts of money in infrastructure, like computers, to increase the flexibility of assets.

Small businesses don’t have any of those things typically, and therefore don’t need access to all of that technology, he added.

However, for businesses that like the idea of a private cloud, Levin said there are private clouds hosted by companies like Rackspace, Amazon and Microsoft that give small businesses their own dedicated equipment on a dedicated network; so in a sense it is private, but the company wouldn’t have to keep all of that in-house. He cautioned, however, that it requires companies to write their own software and applications.

At CDW, it sees its small business clients using the cloud’s three service models: Software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service.

Saas is predominantly used for office productivity such as email, word processing, crunching numbers, online file sharing and basic forms of communication, not to mention security purposes (i.e. downloading spamware, malware and intrusion protection software). Iaas functions like storage and computing, Braat said. It can be used to store intellectual property like documents, drawings, applications and code proprietary to a business.

“Typically, technologists think about Iaas in scenarios, such as what can I do for backup in the event of a disaster,” he said. “Small businesses are getting to the point where they no longer store documents locally in anticipation of an unforeseen event, so while performing disaster recovery, they can get to them quickly and inexpensively.”

Platform as a service, meanwhile, can be used to develop and run a website in the cloud or build applications.

Small business silver lining

CDW’s market research shows that security, performance and integration are the barriers most often cited by small businesses.

Despite the issues, customers are indicating a steep growth in implementing cloud technology of between 27 percent and 39 percent year-over-year, he added.

John Zanni, vice president of service provider marketing and alliances for Parallels, said he has seen huge opportunity and growth of small businesses consuming cloud services.

“It’s less relevant what technology is being used, but more relevant if the services are using well-known brands,” Zanni said. “That way, you are comfortable that the technology is the latest, the best brand, the most efficient and most secure software. Owners should care about what the cloud is doing to enable them to focus time on customers and make them happy.”

One step at a time

While there are lots of technologies that make up the cloud, he cautions owners not to think they have to do everything the cloud has to offer or none at all.

“Take it in over time,” he added. “Many of the services have a try-before-you-buy model which is a good way for small businesses to test the waters without taking on too much risk.”

Just like any other new product or service, Tribeca Cloud’s Diamond said small companies should do their due diligence. One of the pitfalls is relying on third-party services to tell business owners what they should be using. Another is providers trying to push a long-term contract.

“Some Saas providers will try to get businesses to use their proprietary software, but on a long-term contract,” he said. “You need to be looking out for a service that is month-to-month. Let them prove they are doing what they say they are doing.”

There are perceived trade-offs for the cloud that include control and security, but really there aren’t any depending on business, said Box’s Levin, who has worked with small businesses and the cloud for six years.

“Realistically, those companies are going to get much better security, reliability and performance with much lower costs and hassle,” he said. “I’ve see a number of small businesses lose data because it wasn’t backed up or living on an old machine slid under the desk of some manager.”

Today, companies can trade that in for the cloud and get world-class infrastructure maintained by some of the best companies on the planet, and get it for $50 a month or less, Levin added.

If a company does it right, cloud services will enable them to get enterprise-level information technology at a cost that is aligned with their own business model, Parallels’ Zanni said. Because cloud is pay-as-you-go, owners may pay between $5 and $10 per user versus several thousands of dollars for servers and specialists to run them.

Another benefit is being able to reach out to employees and customers, collaborating in ways a company could not before, such as using a webpage and online chatting function to expand a company’s reach, he added.

“We are in a deeply connected world today,” Zanni said. “What is happening in the consumer world should be happening in the business world.”
