What s A Financial Analyst And How Do You Become One?

Each day, countless bits and bytes of financial information are gathered, monitored and crunched to keep markets and companies in the green.

While computers do a lot of the work for us, at some point human beings have to check out the data and make decisions based on what it says.

They don t make all the big decisions, but Financial Analysts play a key role in that process. It s one of the most common entry level jobs in finance, so we ve compiled everything you need to know about being and becoming a Financial Analyst right here!

What does a Financial Analyst do?

Well, the job title itself is actually pretty self explanatory. In simple terms, you collect and analyze financial information, and then make recommendations to your company, customers or clients based on your analysis. Especially early on, you ll spend a lot of time working on spreadsheets, creating reports and giving presentations.

However, there are many different types of Financial Analysts, such as Securities Analysts, Investment Analysts or Ratings Analysts, and they can work for a number of different types of organizations, including insurance companies, investment banks, mutual funds, pension funds, hedge funds and securities firms, as well as companies that operate in any industry in Canada! Each type of analyst will perform different functions and have different responsibilities on a day-to-day basis.

Buy side vs. sell side

Most commonly, Financial Analysts are broken up into two distinct groups: those who work on the buy side and those who work on the sell side.

Buy side: Analysts on the buy side work for organizations that have money to invest (also known as institutional investors). Institutional investors can be funds, insurance companies, hospitals, colleges and universities basically anyone who has money and needs help developing investment strategies.

Sell side: These are the sexy analyst jobs that many students dream of, with investment banks and securities firms. Analysts on the sell side help these companies price and sell their products.

Outside of this structure, Financial Analysts may also evaluate organizations abilities to repay their debts or be responsible for performing budget and cost analyses.

Educational requirements

Typically, an undergraduate degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, management or statistics is required for entry level Financial Analyst jobs .

Some Financial Analysts choose to complete MBAs, and obtain a variety of accounting- and finance-related certifications and designations. such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Investment Manager (CIM), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified General Accountant (CGA) designations.

In-demand skills:

There’s nothing ‘soft’ about soft skills

These roles require candidates who are self starters and have excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills. Be sure to highlight these on your resume and point out specific examples in your interview!

Tech it up

General computer proficiency (typing skills, Internet literacy, ability to use Microsoft programs) is essential. Beyond that, the ability to navigate various finance-related software programs will make you a much stronger candidate. Find out what software a company uses before interviewing with them and know a little bit about how it works.

Set yourself apart

Whether you want to work as a Financial Analyst on the buy side or the sell side or somewhere else altogether getting a job is going to be competitive. There are, however, a few ways you can stand out:

  • Get experience working in a financial services environment while you re still a student
  • Keep your grades up there are a lot of business students out there and employers only want the best-of-the-best analytical minds
  • Get involved in or start a finance- or investing-related student group on your campus many employers work with and recruit directly from these groups

Online Accredited Juris Doctor (JD) Degree Programs

Harvard University started awarding these degrees in the 19th century as a more advanced version of the old European doctor of law degree. It will not be wrong to say that Juris doctor degree is an end result of the evolving thought process of the scientific study of law. Usually; it is a degree which is a primary specialized training for lawyers – a three year program in general everywhere.

United States host a lot of School of law with Juris doctor degree courses and some of the best online law colleges for J.D. and LL.M. degree Programs. Online accredited law degree programs for Juris doctorate degrees and attaining JD Degree Skills are also very popular.

What exactly is a Juris Doctorate – is it a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral Degree?

Juris Doctorate is a first professional degree. It is not a terminal degree alike PhD which is the highest degree one can dream to attain in a respective field. This is an entry level degree or a first degree. It is also called a professional doctorate degree alike M.D program in the medical field.

Juris Doctor is a first professional Doctorate degree in law. Colleges and universities in the United States of America and common law countries offer the Juris Doctor degree. These degree holders are the qualified and certified individuals who practice law dedicatedly. Primary responsibilities include seeing that the laws are maintained and endorsed in varied situations. They practice in a variety of fields including

  • Criminal Law
  • Personal Injury
  • Family Law
  • Corporate law

Juris doctor degree requirements are to clear an examination to attain a license for practicing law in the respective jurisdiction. All those who clear the bar examination as a prerequisite; are then recognized as attorneys or lawyers and add up a suffix esquire (Esq.) or J.D. It is not necessary that all the Juris doctor degree holders appear for the bar examination, hence not necessarily all the Juris doctor degree holders are licensed lawyers or attorneys – varied jurisdictions may take their own call.

Initially the idea behind introducing a Juris doctor degree was to replace the degree of Juris doctor bachelor of laws. Juris doctor degree represents the professional recognition that the degree holder has attained doctoral in law. Considering the tenure of study in order to attain the degree; usually lawyers in America – the name change carried and showed its significance.

It also serves as a prerequisite fulfillment for some of the designations and programs in the financial world. Recent trend is of colleges and universities offering joint degrees and dual degrees – MBA and Juris Doctor. It is helpful to students for completion of both the degrees in less than required tenure separately for each one of it and also is considerably cost effective.

It is a three year program with syllabus is taught with the help of logic and analysis theories – which may vary from institute to institute. To everyone s surprise the syllabus has not changed since inception which happens to be a rigorous study of the significant law and its skilled application. It is a entry level to skilled law practice.

Legal expertise have become and inevitable aspect to success and hence Juris doctor degree holders have ample opportunities and are employed mainly with

  • Consultative firms
  • Hospitals
  • Law firms
  • Not-for-profits
  • Politics
  • Private corporations
  • Various levels of government

Juris Doctorate Career Opportunities

  • Banking and finance
  • Civil defense attorneys
  • Communications
  • Corporate counselors
  • Entrepreneur
  • Human resources
  • Politics
  • Professional litigators
  • Public service

Top online accredited Juris doctor degree programs Joint Degree – Dual Degree

As said above; recently a few of the colleges and universities have initiated offering dual degree programs along with Juris doctorate degree. Individuals who are interested in making careers in other fields and not law – or want to specialize within the segment of law may enroll themselves for such programs which are complimentary to a Juris doctor program. LL.M – Master of laws happens to be a good example of such programs.

Joint Degrees include:

Discovery of the electron and nucleus (article) #khan #academy, #learn, #videos, #lectures, #practice, #exercises, #skills

Discovery of the electron and nucleus

All matter is made of indivisible particles called atoms. which cannot be created or destroyed.

Atoms of the same element have identical mass and physical properties.

Compounds are combinations of atoms of 2 2 2 2 or more elements.

All chemical reactions involve the rearrangement of atoms.

Dalton s ideas proved foundational to modern atomic theory. However, one of his underlying assumptions was later shown to be incorrect. Dalton thought that atoms were the smallest units of matter − – − minus tiny, hard spheres that could not be broken down any further. This assumption persisted until experiments in physics showed that the atom was composed of even smaller particles. In this article, we will discuss some of the key experiments that led to the discovery of the electron and the nucleus.

J.J. Thomson and the discovery of the electron

In the late 1 9 t h 19^<\text> 1 9 th 19, start superscript, t, h, end superscript century, physicist J.J. Thomson began experimenting with cathode ray tubes. Cathode ray tubes are sealed glass tubes from which most of the air has been evacuated. A high voltage is applied across two electrodes at one end of the tube, which causes a beam of particles to flow from the cathode (the negatively-charged electrode) to the anode (the positively-charged electrode). The tubes are called cathode ray tubes because the particle beam or cathode ray originates at the cathode. The ray can be detected by painting a material known as phosphors onto the far end of the tube beyond the anode. The phosphors spark, or emit light, when impacted by the cathode ray.

A diagram of J.J. Thomson s cathode ray tube. The ray originates at the cathode and passes through a slit in the anode. The cathode ray is deflected away from the negatively-charged electric plate, and towards the positively-charged electric plate. The amount by which the ray was deflected by a magnetic field helped Thomson determine the mass-to-charge ratio of the particles. Image from Openstax, CC BY 4.0 .

To test the properties of the particles, Thomson placed two oppositely-charged electric plates around the cathode ray. The cathode ray was deflected away from the negatively-charged electric plate and towards the positively-charged plate. This indicated that the cathode ray was composed of negatively-charged particles.

Thomson also placed two magnets on either side of the tube, and observed that this magnetic field also deflected the cathode ray. The results of these experiments helped Thomson determine the mass-to-charge ratio of the cathode ray particles, which led to a fascinating discovery − – − minus the mass of each particle was much, much smaller than that of any known atom. Thomson repeated his experiments using different metals as electrode materials, and found that the properties of the cathode ray remained constant no matter what cathode material they originated from. From this evidence, Thomson made the following conclusions:

The cathode ray is composed of negatively-charged particles.

The particles must exist as part of the atom, since the mass of each particle is only ∼ \sim ∼ 1 2 0 0 0 \dfrac<1><2000> 2 0 0 0 1 start fraction, 1, divided by, 2000, end fraction the mass of a hydrogen atom.

These subatomic particles can be found within atoms of all elements.

While controversial at first, Thomson s discoveries were gradually accepted by scientists. Eventually, his cathode ray particles were given a more familiar name: electrons. The discovery of the electron disproved the part of Dalton s atomic theory that assumed atoms were indivisible. In order to account for the existence of the electrons, an entirely new atomic model was needed.

Concept check: Why did Thomson conclude that electrons could be found in atoms of all elements?

As part of his experiments with cathode ray tubes, Thomson tried changing the cathode material, which was the source of the particles. Since the same particles were emitted even when the cathode materials were changed to different metals, Thomson concluded that the particle was a fundamental part of all atoms.

Ernest Rutherford and the gold foil experiment

The next groundbreaking experiment in the history of the atom was performed by Ernest Rutherford, a physicist from New Zealand who spent most of his career in England and Canada. In his famous gold foil experiment, Rutherford fired a thin beam of α \alpha α alpha particles (pronounced alpha particles) at a very thin sheet of pure gold. Alpha particles are helium nuclei ( 2 4 H e 2 + ) (_2^4\text^<2+>) ( 2 4 He 2 + ) left parenthesis, start subscript, 2, end subscript, start superscript, 4, end superscript, H, e, start superscript, 2, plus, end superscript, right parenthesis. and they are given off in various radioactive decay processes. In this case, Rutherford placed a sample of radium (a radioactive metal) inside a lead box with a small pinhole in it. Most of the radiation was absorbed by the lead, but a thin beam of α \alpha α alpha particles escaped out of the pinhole in the direction of the gold foil. The gold foil was surrounded by a detector screen that would flash when hit with an α \alpha α alpha particle.

Believe it or not, the use of gold was not simply a result of Rutherford s extravagant taste. Gold is incredibly malleable. which means it can be hammered into extremely thin sheets. In fact, the thinnest gold sheets can have widths as small as 0. 0 0 0 0 4 c m 0.00004\text< cm> 0. 0 0 0 0 4 cm 0, point, 00004, space, c, m. which is only only a few atoms thick! A foil this thin was necessary for Rutherford to carry out his experiment successfully. If the foil were any thicker, the α \alpha α alpha particles might not have been able to penetrate it.

In Rutherford s gold foil experiment, a beam of α \alpha α alpha particles that was shot at a thin sheet of gold foil. Most of the α \alpha α alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil, but a small number were deflected slightly, and an even smaller fraction were deflected more than 9 0 ∘ 90^<\circ> 9 0 ∘ 90, degree from their path. Image from Openstax, CC BY 4.0 .

Based on Thomson s plum pudding model, Rutherford predicted that most of the α \alpha α alpha particles would pass straight through the gold foil. This is because the positive charge in the plum pudding model was assumed to be spread out throughout the entire volume of the atom. Therefore, the electric field from the positively charged soup would be too weak to significantly affect the path of the relatively massive and fast-moving α \alpha α alpha particles.

The results of the experiment, however, were striking. While almost all of the α \alpha α alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil, a few α \alpha α alpha particles (about 1 1 1 1 in 2 0 20 2 0 20. 0 0 0 000 0 0 0 000 ) were deflected more than 9 0 ∘ 90^<\circ> 9 0 ∘ 90, degree from their path! Rutherford himself described the results with the following analogy: It was quite the most incredible event that has ever happened to me in my life. It was almost as incredible as if you fired a 1 5 15 1 5 15 – i n c h \text inch i, n, c, h shell at a piece of tissue paper and it came back and hit you.

This led Rutherford to propose the nuclear model. in which an atom consists of a very small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by the negatively charged electrons. Based on the number of α \alpha α alpha particles deflected in his experiment, Rutherford calculated that the nucleus took up a tiny fraction of the volume of the atom.

The nuclear model explained Rutherford s experimental results, but it also raised further questions. For example, what were the electrons doing in the atom? How did the electrons keep themselves from collapsing into the nucleus, since opposite charges attract? Luckily, science was ready for the challenge! Physicists such as Niels Bohr continued to design experiments to test the nuclear model of the atom, which eventually evolved into the modern quantum mechanical model.

J.J. Thomson s experiments with cathode ray tubes showed that all atoms contain tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons.

Thomson proposed the plum pudding model of the atom, which had negatively-charged electrons embedded within a positively-charged soup.

Rutherford s gold foil experiment showed that the atom is mostly empty space with a tiny, dense, positively-charged nucleus.

Based on these results, Rutherford proposed the nuclear model of the atom.
